Following an enormous fire engulfing South Korea's eastern coastal region, sensational K-pop girl band BLACKPINK called off its press conference set for Friday morning to announce the release of a new album, "Kill This Love."
YG Entertainment, the management agency for the girl band, made the decision, formally citing the national disaster involving the fire hitting five cities and counties in Gangwon Province.
The announcement of the cancellation came less than two hours before the press conference was scheduled to start at 11a.m.
"We made this decision to share the pain of the residents of Gangwon Province in the wake of the blaze in Goseong and Sokcho," YG said in a short media release.
"With all its heart, (YG) extends its consolations to those who work laboriously to extinguish the fire."
As the fire, believed to have started late Thursday on a roadside in Goseong, Gangwon Province, spread quickly to neighboring areas, the government on Friday declared a state of national disaster.
At the turn of Friday, BLACKPINK's new album, "Kill This Love," hit the global music scene. It was the band's first new release since putting out "Square Up" in mid-June last year.
The previous EP's main track, "Ddu-du Ddu-du," topped 700 million YouTube views, the highest by any K-pop band on the website, and debuted at number 55 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.
The cancellation also came as YG is coping with an intense public outcry after Seungri, a former member of YG's mainstay boy band BIGBANG, came under police investigation on charges of procuring sex services for potential foreign investors at Seoul night clubs and illegally making obscene videos and photos and circulating them in online chat rooms.
The new five-track BLACKPINK EP is fronted by the title track, "Kill This Love."
The song's music video drew more than 20 million YouTube views within 10 hours of its release. (Yonhap)
