Two fatal collisions occur Saturday afternoon | News | starkvilledailynews.com - Starkville Daily News

On Saturday, July 31, there were two fatal traffic incidents. One occurred in the county, and one occurred inside Starkville city limits.

The Oktibbeha County Sheriff's Department (OCSD) and Oktibbeha County Fire Department (OCFD) responded to a two vehicle traffic accident on Oktoc Road. There was one fatality and two others were injured and taken to Oktibbeha County Hospital for treatment.

District Five OCFD had to use the jaws to remove the victims. The accident is currently under investigation and the OCSD has not released the names of those involved in the accident.

The other accident occurred within city limits, and Starkville Police Department (SPD) was on the scene of a collision between a motorcycle and a car at the intersection of Industrial Park Road and Miley Drive.

22-year-old Sturgis resident William Grayson Watson was pronounced dead on the scene.

This crash is currently being investigated by SPD.

We will update this information as we learn more regarding both wrecks. This is a reminder to pay attention to the road, do not get distracted, and watch for other motorists.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those involved and their families.

OKC Thunder: The hidden benefits of the Derrick Favors trade - Thunderous Intentions

gamagana.blogspot.com

The OKC Thunder had a very busy 24 hour period which started with the NBA draft and ended with a trade involving Derrick Favors and the Utah Jazz. While many people question the moves that Sam Presti makes, very few of them do not work out.

The Thunder surprised the NBA by selecting Australian Josh Giddey with the sixth pick of the 2021 NBA draft. When Scottie Barnes was taken by the Toronto Raptors, They left a consensus top-five pick Jonathan Kuminga on the board but the Thunder likes the look of the young Aussie.

They also picked Tre Mann at No. 17, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl at No. 32, and Aaron Wiggins at pick No. 55. However, the best move that they made for short-term gains was the trade with the Jazz which netted them Favors and a future first-round pick for the cost of only a future second-round pick.

How the OKC Thunder benefit from the Derrick Favors trade.

More from Thunderous Intentions

The first benefit of the Thunder is that they have found their starting center for the season. Favors has been used mainly in a bench role for the Jazz as they have the two-time Defensive Player of the Year, Rudy Gobert, in the starting lineup.

However, the benefits for the Thunder do not stop at getting an experienced veteran as their starting pivot. They also get another mentor for Isaiah Roby, Darius Bazley, Aleksej Pokusevski, and Robinson-Earl to learn from.

The Thunder also gets another future first-round pick with Favors, all for the cost of a future second-round pick. The Thunder are continuing to add to their war chest in the next four or five upcoming drafts

This is Sam Presti working his magic again, helping another team get under the luxury tax apron. The Jazz needed to do in order to sign Mike Conley amongst other players for next season. He is able to seize on any opportunity to benefit his team

However, the Thunder might only have Favors on their books for a single season. He has a player option for $10.1 million in the final year of his deal. He is unlikely to exercise this option as he is going to want to compete for a championship as he enters the back end of his career.

Bleacher Report says New Orleans Saints should trade for Jordan Hicks - Who Dat Dish

gamagana.blogspot.com

The New Orleans Saints need to get better at linebacker and an intriguing option to look at who could be available via trade is Jordan Hicks, who currently plays for the Cardinals.

Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report put together a list of one trade every NFL team should make ahead of the season and while it wasn’t his entry for the Saints, he said the Cardinals should send Hicks to New Orleans.

By moving Hicks, the Cardinals can save nearly $3 million and add an extra draft asset. The Saints, meanwhile, want to improve at linebacker and recently brought in Kwon Alexander for a visit, according to Adam Schefter.

Hicks is expendable in Arizona now that the Cardinals added Zaven Collins to tag team with Isaiah Simmons at the linebacker position. Hicks is a good player but he’s not great and that’s why he could be made available throughout training camp and preseason activities.

There’s no doubt that the Saints could benefit greatly from having Hicks on their team. The dude is a tackling machine, having notched over 100 tackles in each of the last two seasons. He’s not someone the team should rely on to rush the passer but that wouldn’t be why he was brought in.

Hicks is also durable, starting all 32 games over the past two years. He’d fit in well with what the Saints are looking for.

Would a trade for Jordan Hicks make sense for the New Orleans Saints?

The Saints had Kwon Alexander in for a visit not long ago but no deal has been agreed to, unfortunately. This means that the Saints are still searching for a sure fire starter to pair with Demario Davis.

After the first day of practice, Davis was joined by Kaden Elliss and Zack Baun on the starting team with rookie Pete Werner swapping in with Baun later on. Hicks would give the Saints a guy who is used to starting and could help out enough to open things up for Davis to be the monster that we all know he can be.

This is a trade that was proposed for the Cardinals but since it involved the Saints, it made perfect sense to write about it. Hicks would bring a veteran linebacker to New Orleans and he’d instantly help out at a position of need.

With Hicks not being a superstar, the Saints might not have to pony up much to land him either. This is certainly something that could happen and should happen. Here’s to hoping.

Sources - Boston Celtics acquire Josh Richardson, trade Tristan Thompson in separate 3-team deal - ESPN

gamagana.blogspot.com

The Boston Celtics were involved in a pair of moves to reshuffle their roster Friday that saw them ship out center Tristan Thompson and bring back three players: guard Kris Dunn and center Bruno Fernando from the Atlanta Hawks and guard Josh Richardson from the Dallas Mavericks.

The first deal saw Thompson wind up with the Sacramento Kings, guard Delon Wright go from Sacramento to Atlanta and Dunn and Fernando wind up in Boston, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Boston also received a 2023 second-round pick in the deal, sources said.

Later Friday, Boston struck another deal, with sources confirming that the Celtics landed Richardson from the Mavericks by using the remainder of the trade exception created by the sign-and-trade deal that sent Gordon Hayward to the Charlotte Hornets in November.

Boston now has 13 players with fully guaranteed contracts for next season and are around $5 million in guaranteed money below the projected luxury tax line of $136.6 million for the 2021-22 season, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks.

The Celtics will enter free agency next week with at least one significant decision ahead of them: the possibility of re-signing guard Evan Fournier, whom they acquired with the remainder of the Hayward trade exception in March in the hours leading up to the trade deadline. With their current roster situation, re-signing Fournier would push the Celtics well into the luxury tax for next season.

Richardson, who will turn 28 in September, is about to play on his fourth team in as many years in the wake of back-to-back disappointing seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers and Mavericks. After being acquired by the Sixers in a sign-and-trade for Jimmy Butler two summers ago, Richardson struggled to find a fit in Philadelphia. Then, after being swapped for Seth Curry during the 2020 NBA draft in November, Richardson averaged 12.1 points for Dallas but tied a career low in shooting 33 percent from 3-point range.

He also went from starting all but three regular season games for the Mavericks to coming off the bench for all seven games of Dallas' first-round playoff series loss to the LA Clippers -- including playing less than 10 minutes in each of the final three games of that series.

Richardson, who had a player option for the 2021-22 season, will exercise that option to remain under contract as part of this deal.

Thompson, 30, averaged 7.6 points and 8.1 rebounds in 54 games for the Celtics last season, his first time playing anywhere outside of Cleveland, where he spent the first nine years of his NBA career. But with the emergence of third-year center Robert Williams III, plus the return of center Al Horford as part of the Kemba Walker trade last month, there wasn't a need for Thompson any longer in Boston.

Now, though, he's headed to Sacramento, where he will give the Kings insurance at the center spot with starter Richaun Holmes set to be an unrestricted free agent Monday.

Dunn, 27, played just four games during the regular season as he dealt with multiple injury issues, and then saw a total of 33 minutes of action across five playoff games during Atlanta's run to the Eastern Conference finals. If healthy, the former Providence College star could provide the Celtics some defense on the wing.

Fernando, who will turn 23 in August, averaged 1.5 points across 33 games last year for Atlanta. He was the 34th pick in the 2019 NBA draft.

Wright averaged 10.2 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.4 assists in 63 games split between the Detroit Pistons and the Kings last season. The 29-year-old, now playing for his sixth team, gives Atlanta some depth in the backcourt behind Trae Young, where he can either be his backup or play alongside impending free agent Lou Williams if the Hawks are able to re-sign him.

All five players involved in both deals are on contracts that will expire at the end of the 2021-22 season. Richardson will make $11.6 million next season; Thompson is set to make $9.7 million; Wright will make $8.5 million; Dunn will make just over $5 million and Fernando is set to make $1.7 million.

The Athletic was first to report the Celtics acquiring Richardson.

NBA Trade news: The Kings are trading Delon Wright for Tristan Thompson - Sactown Royalty

gamagana.blogspot.com

In the NBA Draft, it’s tough not to take the best player available when you’re in the lottery, and the Kings did that when they drafted Davion Mitchell, a national champion guard out of Baylor.

The problem with picking a guard is there wasn’t expected to be a ton of playing time for Mitchell behind De’Aaron Fox, Tyrese Haliburton, Buddy Hield, Delon Wright, and Terence Davis. As a result, Sacramento is clearing out one of the players in front of Mitchell by reportedly trading Delon Wright to Atlanta.

Being the fifth guard isn’t a clear path to playing time, but it’s certainly better than being sixth. One has to assume that the Kings also aren’t done looking for trading partners for Hield after getting so close to sending him to Los Angeles.

In the process, the Kings have also secured some insurance at the center position. Without knowing if Richaun Holmes will be returning in free agency — and given that the team was unable to clear cap space for Holmes with a Hield trade — Sacramento got a competent backup center in Tristan Thompson. Thompson is a veteran with championship experience who should be a good presence in the locker room, and he can help Damian Jones, Chimezie Metu, and Neemias Queta learn the position. Thompson also only has one year left on his contract, so this isn’t a long-term investment.

The Kings were able to shift their roster imbalance by adding a big instead of a guard. Whether Thompson is a better player than Wright is unclear, but he fills a bigger need for the time being.

Fantasy Baseball Trade Deadline winners and losers: Anthony Rizzo, Reid Detmers, Trevor Story trending up - CBS Sports

craig-kimbrel.jpg

The trade deadline was frenzied and spectacular, among the most active we've seen in recent years. If you're looking for a breakdown of all the trades and what they mean for Fantasy Baseball, allow me to direct you to that.

What I'm doing here is different. What I'm doing here is picking out which players gained the most value and which lost the most value as a consequence of the trade deadline. My picks aren't limited just to the players who were traded. Sometimes the players they're joining or leaving behind are the ones impacted the most.

Pretty straightforward, I think, so we'll jump right in with the five biggest winners followed by the five biggest losers.

Padres trade rumors: Deal for Cubs OF Jake Marisnick is done - Friars on Base

gamagana.blogspot.com

Thud. That was the sound of the Padres at the 2021 MLB trade deadline on Friday afternoon. Near the 1 p.m. PT end, ESPN’s Jeff Passan tweeted they would be trading for Jake Marisnick of the Chicago Cubs.

After a week of rumors about which high-profile pitcher might be acquired, the tantalizing word “close” being used in a tweet linking the Padres to Max Scherzer by Ken Rosenthal, and an actual deal for Daniel Hudson on Thursday, well, not much of anything happened on Friday.

Not even many juicy rumors to get everyone excited. Mainly it was a day where seemingly every other team — including the Dodgers and Giants, the latter of whom picked up Kris Bryant — had its moment in the rumor spotlight.

But not the Padres.

Scouting report for new Padres OF Jake Marisnick

Marisnick spent just 65 games in a Cubs uniform. He spent most of his major league time with the Astros, since then bouncing to the Mets and Cubs for a year apiece.

He was generally worth about 1 WAR (FanGraphs version) per season with the Astros but has been playing at a replacement level since then.

This year he’s batting .227 with .294 on-base percentage and .438 slugging. That puts him a little bit below average as a batter overall (95 wRC+).

In the field, he’s also been a little less than average.

In exchange for Marisnick, the Padres sent right-handed pitcher Anderson Espinoza, per Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Espinoza was ranked ninth in the Padres’ system by FanGraphs with a future value of 40+.

All of the Padres rumors we’re tracking at the MLB trade deadline - Friars on Base

gamagana.blogspot.com

San Diego Padres trade rumors have been frequent and intriguing all month, but with the July 30 MLB trade deadline now upon us expect them to get even more exciting.

So far, the Padres have acquired reliever Daniel Hudson from the Nationals and second baseman Adan Frazier from the Pirates.

They came “close” — per Ken Rosenthal — to a deal that would have brought ace right-hander Max Scherzer to San Diego as well, before the Dodgers swooped in and apparently scooped him up along with shortstop Trea Turner.

But with now less than seven hours until the MLB trade deadline, set for 1 p.m. PT today, the Padres are still being linked to multiple players in recent rumors.

Visit this post all day to keep up with what we’re seeing written.

Update: The trade deadline is now complete.

Padres 2021 trade rumors we’re tracking at the MLB trade deadline

OF Jake Marisnick

The Padres reported traded for Cubs outfielder Jake Marisnick, per Jeff Passan.

Marisnick had a .227/.294/.438 line and is worth a little less than 1 WAR.

SP Max Scherzer

The Max Scherzer deal was “close” but the Padres couldn’t finish it. Apparently the Dodgers are having that same problem, despite reports that made it sound as if the deal was all but done.

We’re not holding out hopes on this one, but pass this tweet from Jon Heyman along:

SP Jose Berrios, Twins

With Max Scherzer off the list of possibilities, Twins right-hander Jose Berrios becomes the consolation prize for any team looking for starting pitching.

Berrios sports a 3.48 ERA this year with a 1.04 WHIP. He  has 126 strikeouts in 122 innings this year, good for 25.7% strikeout rate and 6.5% walk rate.

Berrios has one year of arbitration eligibility remaining and is being paid $6 million in 2021.

UPDATE:

It now appears Berrios is headed to the Jays.

SP Kyle Gibson, Rangers

Kyle Gibson has a 2.87 ERA for the Rangers and made an appearance in the 2021 MLB All-Star Game. He boasts a 1.18 WHIP as well. If they miss out on Berrios, the Padres might look to Gibson to help bolster a middling rotation.

In 113 innings he has 94 strikeouts and 41 walks, good for a strikeout rate of 20.4% and walk rate of 8.9%.

Gibson, along with Scherzer and Berrios, was in our list of dream starting pitching targets.

He’s in his ninth season in the majors. He has the remaining two months of a $9 million salary for 2021 and is owed $7 million in 2022.

Update: Lost this one too.

Original:

Closer Craig Kimbrel, Cubs

Seemingly everyone — every buyer, at least — remains in on Cubs closer Craig Kimbrel, who is puttnig up numbers that even look too good for a video game. The Padres, like the rest, are rumored to be in on Kimbrel.

Kimbrel’s stats include 64 strikeouts in 36 innings, good for a 15.71 K/9 (which is an incredible 46.7% strikeout rate), and amazing ERA is 0.49, and WHIP of 0.709.He has 23 saves in 25 attempts (92% save percentage).

Kimbrel has an option remaining that could keep him with his next club in 2022 on a $16 million deal.

UPDATE: It appears Kimbrel is headed south to the White Sox.

Here’s how many breakthrough COVID-19 cases have occurred in Mass. - Boston.com

Coronavirus

The Bay State has seen 6,373 breakthrough cases as of July 24, according to the Department of Public Health.

David L Ryan/Globe Staff

Massachusetts is seeing a growing number of breakthrough COVID-19 cases in fully vaccinated individuals.

The Bay State has seen 6,373 breakthrough cases, as of July 24, according to data released by the Department of Public Health on Thursday. Of that number, 361 people were hospitalized and 91 individuals with breakthrough cases have died.

According to the state, the breakthrough cases represent 0.15% of the 4,351,752 people who have been fully vaccinated in Massachusetts. The hospitalized breakthrough cases represent 0.009% of fully vaccinated individuals; the deaths 0.002%.

According to WCVB, the number of breakthrough cases jumped up from 5,166 cases reported as of July 17 and 4,450 reported the previous week.

Advertisement:

The state has seen a rise in its COVID-19 infection rates in recent weeks, driven, according to Gov. Charlie Baker and public health officials, by the super-contagious Delta variant and gatherings held around the July Fourth holiday.

Provincetown has seen a surge of hundreds of cases, many among fully vaccinated individuals. New data from that outbreak, which showed individuals who were vaccinated were transmitting the virus to other fully vaccinated people, was one of the factors for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updating its guidelines for indoor mask use earlier this week, the Washington Post reports

Advertisement:

The federal agency is now recommending that all individuals — regardless of their vaccination status — wear face coverings in public, indoor spaces in counties experiencing “substantial” or “high” levels of COVID-19. That threshold is defined by the CDC as at least 50 new cases per 100,000 people in the last week or averaging a positive test rate above 8 percent.

Provincetown is among a few Massachusetts municipalities that have already moved to update mask mandates in the face of rising cases. But Gov. Charlie Baker has said his administration is still mulling the change in CDC guidelines.

Advertisement:

“We just got it and we’re reviewing it, and we’ll have more to say about it later,” Baker told reporters Wednesday.

Baker also said Wednesday his administration is “considering” additional changes the CDC suggested this week, recommending that everyone — teachers, staff, students, visitors — wear masks in schools this fall, even if they’re vaccinated. The governor previously said his administration had no plans to alter its stance of lifting all COVID-19 restrictions for the upcoming school year.

Colorado Rockies: All the Rockies related moves we’re tracking at the trade deadline - Rox Pile

gamagana.blogspot.com

The Colorado Rockies could trade a few players if they choose to on Friday before the trade deadline. The Rockies have already relief pitcher Mychal Givens to the Cincinnati Reds but shortstop Trevor Story, right-handed pitcher Jon Gray, first baseman C.J. Cron, and relief pitcher Daniel Bard have also had a lot of trade rumors surrounding them.

Today, we will have this tracker of rumors that we are hearing on July 30. We will update the article as we hear more.

More from Rox Pile

Here are the Colorado Rockies-related trade rumors we are hearing on Friday.

Jose Berrios is heading north of the border as the Minnesota Twins have traded him to the Toronto Blue Jays. They got two of MLB.com’s Top 100 prospects for the rest of this season and next season before Berrios is a free agent. This could mean that the Rockies could get a good haul if they want to trade Jon Gray.

However, multiple reports (including Thomas Harding of MLB.com) indicate that the Rockies and Gray are trying to sign a contract extension. If they are trying to extend him, the club will almost certainly keep him at the deadline.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com has reported that the Rockies have no intention to trade Gray or Daniel Bard.

The Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays have been linked to Trevor Story but there have been conflicting reports on whether the Rays are really trying to get Story or if there’s not much traction with the Rays or Blue Jays.

Feinsand also reports that the Mets and Giants are also interested in Story, which should not be a surprise to readers of this site, as we have reported that the Mets are interested in Story numerous times recently and we also reported on the Giants as well.

Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports that the Cardinals are also interested in Story. Again, not a total surprise, as we have reported that Story could be a fit there.

We will update this article below for more rumors that we hear before the trade deadline that is just over two hours away.

UPDATE: Joel Sherman of MLB Network and The New York Post reports that the ask on Story as dropped and “now feels more” likely that Story will be traded.

2nd UPDATE: Mark Feinsand of MLB.com contradicts Sherman by saying that the asking price for Story has not budged.

3rd UPDATE: Feinsand reports that the Giants remain engaged with the Rockies on Story

2021 MLB trade deadline: Rumors, live updates for Kris Bryant, Trevor Story, Craig Kimbrel, Kyle Gibson, more - CBS sports.com

gamagana.blogspot.com

White Sox now have two stud closers

With the White Sox having added Craig Kimbrel, they now have two of the best closers in baseball, including incumbent closer Liam Hendriks.

Kimbrel is 23 for 25 in save chances with a 0.49 ERA, 1.08 FIP, 0.71 WHIP and 64 strikeouts against 13 walks in 36 2/3 inning this season. After a bumpy start to his Cubs' career, he's re-established himself as an elite-level closer.

Hendriks is there as well. He's 25 for 30 in save chances with a 2.58 ERA, 2.71 FIP, 0.73 WHIP and 71 strikeouts against just four unintentional walks in 45 1/3 innings.

Kimbrel is having the better year, statistically, but the White Sox have an eight-game lead in the AL Central. Do they mess with having Hendriks as their ninth-inning guy? Early reports indicate the plan is to use both in closing roles. Flexibility is good, but Tony La Russa is a manager ingrained in his ways and has long preferred just one closer. Hendriks has thrived before in a setup role while Kimbrel has basically only been a closer.

Assuming Hendriks is OK with the role change, and he likely would be, it seems as though the smart move would be to just install Kimbrel as the closer and use Hendriks in either a fireman role -- he's fine to go multiple innings -- or as the eighth-inning guy.

Miami Marlins: Should the Fish Trade for Byron Buxton Right Now? - Marlin Maniac

gamagana.blogspot.com

As the clock begins to tick closer toward the 2021 MLB Trade Deadline, the Miami Marlins haven’t been very active on Friday aside from one deal. However, that can always change at any moment during trade season.

With it widely-known that the Marlins are looking for a long-term center field option via trade, it makes sense that now is the right time to make a deal. However, the time to make a potential deal now might’ve become even more clearer on Friday afternoon as the Twins appear to be on the verge of full sell-mode after trading star pitcher Jose Berrios to the Blue Jays.

The Twins display numerous trade pieces to teams, but arguably none bigger than star outfielder Byron Buxton.

Should the Miami Marlins go trade for Byron Buxton?

The Twins are quickly emerging as big-time sellers still holding numerous trade candidates that are now becoming likely to be moved. As mentioned previously, none of those are bigger than Buxton who makes perfect sense if the Marlins are looking to trade for a long-term center fielder.

Out of all the potential options for Miami to go acquire a center fielder, Buxton now seems the most-likely to be available. If the Marlins are truly set on Buxton going forward, why not go do the trade right now before someone else does?

The Marlins have the prospect capital to make any kind of deal work for virtually any player that is even potentially available, and as we’ve said before, there aren’t any center fielders potentially available better than Buxton.

The 27-year old star center fielder is still under team control for the 2022 season, but would need to be 100% signed to an extension should the Marlins make that trade. Obviously the Marlins, a team out of postseason contention, trading for Buxton might not make sense to most teams/fanbases around the game, but if the Marlins truly want to secure their center fielder going into the 2022 season, they might have to go get Buxton right now before anyone else does.

WASHINGTON—Mark Wu, the U.S. Trade Representative’s top China adviser, said he resigned his position, citing family reasons.

In an interview, Mr. Wu said he left USTR in mid-July and is returning in August to Harvard Law School where he focuses on intellectual property issues and Chinese trade policy.

“The plan had always been to help (Trade Representative) Katherine Tai settle into her role,” Mr. Wu said. “The team has settled into place, and a rhythm has been established.”

Mr. Wu cited family issues as another reason for his departure, which he said had nothing to do with the continuing USTR review of China policy.

USTR is in the midst of a broad review of its China policy, which is expected to be completed in the fall. Few details of the policy have been made public, leading to mounting frustration by big investors and exporters to China. Mr. Wu declined to comment on the policy effort.

Sarah Bianchi, a onetime classmate of Mr. Wu’s at Harvard, is awaiting confirmation by the full Senate as deputy U.S. Trade Representative with responsibility for China and the rest of Asia.

What's next for the Padres?

It's been a rough for days for the Padres, who thought they had a deal in place for Max Scherzer, only to watch him (and Trea Turner) land with the Dodgers. Then they made a play for Jose Berrios, and he wound up with the Blue Jays. San Diego did import closer Daniel Hudson, though he doesn't help a rotation in need of reinforcement.

Who could the Padres target with Yu Darvish hitting a bump in the road the last few weeks and Blake Snell struggling pretty much all season? A few suggestions:

RHP Kyle Gibson, Rangers: Gibson is starting to come back to Earth following that unreal post-Opening Day run. He's not a rental, which may actually be a deterrent for the Padres given the arms they have lined up for next year (Darvish, Snell, Joe Musgrove, Chris Paddack, Ryan Weathers, a returning Mike Clevinger, etc.), though they need help now and Gibson would help.

RHP Jon Gray, Rockies: Reports indicate the Rockies will keep Gray and try to extend him and I get it. He's not afraid of Coors Field and it's tough to find pitchers willing to sign long-term in Colorado, so if the Rockies can keep him, keep him. That said, Gray's career may be over by time the Rockies are ready to contend again. He's a rental and he's familiar with the NL West. Gray may be the ideal pickup for San Diego at this point.

RHP Michael Pineda, Twins: There are days Pineda looks like the best pitcher in baseball, but most days he's merely adequate and leaves you wanting more. He's a rental and a slider specialist who stands out for his control. Pineda is a good bet to eat innings, though he's not a true difference-maker at this point in his career.

Also keep an eye on Angels righty Alex Cobb, Cubs righty and former Padre Zach Davies, and Diamondbacks righty Merrill Kelly.

Colorado Rockies: Looking at the Nolan Arenado trade 6 months later - Rox Pile

gamagana.blogspot.com

No matter what happens by the trade deadline for the Colorado Rockies, they’ve already made their biggest move of the season.

That, of course, happened on February 1 to be exact. Yes, Rockies fans are still not over trading Nolan Arenado with $50 million on top to rub a bathtub of salt in the wound. Fans will get over it one day but until then, in the spirit of the deadline, let’s take some stock on what the Rockies received in return for trading their once-in-a-generation third baseman. This is all with the grain of salt that almost nothing in return would have make it sting any less. Okay, enough about salt.

Let’s look at the Nolan Arenado trade from the Colorado Rockies point of view.

In the cinematography masterpiece Semi-Pro, Will Ferrell’s character Jackie Moon trades for Woody Harrelson to join the Flint Tropics from the Kentucky Colonels for the team’s washing machine. In February, it felt like the Rockies were the Colonels and the washing machine was looking pretty good compared to what the Colorado front office got in return. The sting was real, but the criticism was harsh. There was no way these prospects could ever live up to the hype.

However, now that we are more than halfway through the season, some of those prospects are really giving slivers of optimism.

The biggest source of that optimism right now is Austin Gomber. The burden of that trade will forever rest on Gomber’s shoulders and, to start this season, it looked like it was getting the best of him. By the time he faced his old team in St. Louis at the beginning of May, he had a 6.35 ERA with a 2-4 record. He finished the first month with a 6.65 ERA and seemingly could not find himself. His last start of April against the Giants seemed to sum up the entire first month of the season. Jeff Bridich resigned earlier that day and then the Rox lost 12-0. The cherry on top was that Arenado’s cousin, Joshua Fuentes, pitched in in mop-up duty for Gomber, who started that game. You really can’t make this up.

Sorry, that was no glimmer of optimism. However, really everything that Gomber has done since though has. From that difficult opening month, Gomber had a 3.15 ERA in May and an astounding 1.29 ERA in June. He’s only pitched twice in July going on the IL on June 19 but he had two very solid starts pitching in a tidy 2 hours and 35 minutes Rockies win against the Mariners at Coors Field no less. He pitched well again on Wednesday against the Angels as he only gave up two runs in six innings. He’s giving this team a chance to win and that’s absolutely all you can ask from any pitcher. Gomber is proving to be dependable third arm in the rotation behind GermĂĄn MĂĄrquez and Jon Gray for however long the Rockies keep the Gray Wolf. That’s something that definitely couldn’t be said about Gomber just a few months ago.

Another source of optimism is the noise that Elehuris Montero is making for the Hartford Yard Goats. He is a third baseman, but what has been really putting Montero on the map is his bat, especially the power he possesses. He’s hitting .284 with 18 homers in 250 at-bats. Hopefully he will be promoted to Albuquerque at least by next season and we can see what he is really made of.

The other names involved in the trade are SS Mateo Gil, RHP Tony Locey, and RHP Jake Sommers. The first two suit up for the Low-A affiliate Fresno Grizzlies. Sommers is in High-A with Spokane. Let’s just say all those players have a lot to work out in Single-A. But hey we’ve listed two Rockies who are doing well by the trade deadline. That’s two more than we anticipated to start the season. Maybe we can’t label it a silver lining of the Arenado trade quite yet but we’ll go with titanium or aluminum lining for now.

OKC Thunder trade for Derrick Favors from Utah Jazz - Thunderous Intentions

gamagana.blogspot.com

The OKC Thunder waited mere hours after the 2021 NBA Draft to make yet another roster move. The Thunder kicks off trade season with a deal that helps them fill a position of need while picking up potential assets in the process.

With the team lacking a center, having a clean cap sheet, and longing for even more assets, making this Derrick Favors swap was a no-brainer for Sam Presti and company.

OKC Thunder add Derrick Favors in late-night swap

The Oklahoma City Thunder will take on nine million dollars during the 2021-22 NBA season, with a player option at Favors’ disposal for 10.1 million dollars the following season.

That is not a steep price to pay while adding value to the roster. Both in the trade return, but also with Derrick Favors.

It is unclear the exact plan for the OKC Thunder and Favors, but if the team elects to carry the proven veteran it could pay off in a big way.

More from Thunderous Intentions

By no means will his contract hamstring a franchise that is currently struggling to hit the salary cap floor, but his value within the organization would be great for the rebuild. Ruby Gobert has praised his practice battles with Favors, attributing them as a key to his development.

Adding a big man who is comfortable in a mentor role could pay dividends when dealing with Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, Darius Bazley, Aleksej Pokusevski, and Isaiah Roby down low.

Mark Daigneault and company tried to shoehorn Roby into that center position at times a year ago, and he improved game-by-game. If that is the developmental plan the Thunder wish to take with the Nebraska product, Favors helps in a big way.

A year ago, the 12 year NBA veteran did not make a single start playing in 68 games for the Jazz. He put up 5-points, five rebounds, and a block per contest.

This story will be updated when the trade package is finalized. As of now, it is unclear what other pieces are involved as reported by the Athletic.

Why the Colorado Rockies could be huge beneficiaries of the Washington Nationals-Los Angeles Dodgers trade for Max Scherzer and Trea Turner - Rox Pile

gamagana.blogspot.com

Jeff Passan was the first to report the massive news that the Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals are “finalizing” a deal that would send right-handed starting pitcher Max Scherzer and shortstop Trea Turner to the Dodgers. If it is completed, it will undoubtedly be the biggest trade of the 2021 trade deadline. It will also have a huge impact on the Colorado Rockies in a big way

With Max Scherzer and Trea Turner going to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the asking price for Jon Gray and Trevor Story will go up for the Colorado Rockies

More from Rox Pile

The Colorado Rockies could be a huge beneficiary from the Washington Nationals trading Max Scherzer and Trea Turner to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers are currently three games back of the San Francisco Giants in the NL West and for the best record in all of baseball. However, the Giants have not made a move at the trade deadline, as of this publication.

If a deal goes through, the Los Angeles Dodgers will become the favorites to win the West. As a result, the San Francisco Giants will have to make a move a the trade deadline.

The Giants have had a great starting pitching staff thus far on the season but they are one of three teams that have been heavily linked to Jon Gray, as our colleagues at Around The Foghorn, FanSided’s site for the San Francisco Giants, noted earlier today.

The Giants have a more obvious need for Trevor Story, as we noted in this article on Wednesday. Shortstop Brandon Crawford has since been activated off the injured list but the Giants are without third baseman Evan Longoria due to injury and second baseman Donovan Solano has had a down year. Story would likely slot into one of those spots.

Other teams that missed out on Scherzer will also be more willing to give the Rockies more of what they want for Jon Gray, who is, arguably, the second-best starting pitcher on the market after Scherzer.

If the Rockies play their cards right and don’t overplay their hand or fold, they could be the biggest beneficiaries of the Dodgers deal for Scherzer and Turner by getting a good return for Jon Gray and Trevor Story. But they must play their hand right in the next 19 hours.

Yankees Trade for Anthony Rizzo and Joey Gallo - The New York Times

gamagana.blogspot.com

Despite trailing two teams in the A.L. East and three in the wild card race, the Yankees and Brian Cashman are all-in with the acquisitions of Anthony Rizzo and Joey Gallo.

It was one month ago on Thursday that Brian Cashman, the disarmingly frank general manager of the Yankees, said his team was as bad as it could be. The Yankees’ performance “stinks to the high heavens,” Cashman said, and if things got worse, they might be sellers by the trading deadline.

“If we fall like a stone, you have to regroup and reassess,” he said. “We’re trying to fix what we’ve got, to self-correct what we have and add to it if we can. But if it’s unworthy at some point, then you have to have different conversations.”

The Yankees were two games over .500 then, and now they are five over, at 53-48. If they have not exactly surged since Cashman’s grim assessment, they have not fallen like a stone, either. They have not been forced to make a strategic pivot nobody wanted to make.

So while the Yankees were terrible on the field Thursday — spanked by the Tampa Bay Rays, 14-0 — they were triumphant off it. After announcing a six-player trade with the Texas Rangers that landed one left-handed slugger, outfielder Joey Gallo, they snagged another from the Chicago Cubs with a deal for first baseman Anthony Rizzo.

The Yankees sent Kevin Alcantara, a 19-year-old outfielder in rookie ball, and Alexander Vizcaino, a 24-year-old Class A right-handed pitcher, to the Cubs for Rizzo, who is eligible for free agency this fall. They traded four prospects to the Rangers for Gallo and a left-handed reliever, Joely Rodriguez.

The trades were a firm endorsement by Cashman and the team’s principal owner, Hal Steinbrenner, of a roster that has been plagued by injuries and inconsistency. Even before the Rizzo deal, the players already sounded invigorated.

“From management, it just shows that they believe in this team,” starter Jameson Taillon said. “We’ve obviously been through some adversity so far and we’ve had our ups and downs, but it lets us know that they believe in the group we have and we’re a piece or two away from making a nice run here. That part of it’s exciting. Everyone was talking about it last night; there was definitely a buzz in the clubhouse.”

Louis Deluca/Associated Press

The Yankees must translate that feeling onto the field, of course. Gerrit Cole gave up seven earned runs in five and a third innings on Thursday, and the Yankees did not score, missing a chance for a three-game sweep of the Rays. But behind the scenes, at least, they were acting like the aggressive, win-now brand they are.

“Part of the reason why I’m here is because Hal always goes for it; so does Brian,” said Cole, who signed with the Yankees before the 2020 season. “So I really feel fortunate to be in a spot where the club’s going to make a fantastic move like that and continue to push chips in.”

While Gallo has never played in the postseason, Rizzo, who is batting .248 with 14 home runs this season, helped the Cubs win the 2016 World Series, hitting .410 with three homers, 10 runs batted in and a 1.258 on-base plus slugging percentage across the team’s final 10 postseason games.

Just as important, at least in Cubs’ lore, was Rizzo’s clubhouse routine before Game 5 of the World Series against Cleveland, when the Cubs trailed the series three games to one. Rizzo blasted the “Rocky” theme through the clubhouse and exhorted the team with motivational tips — while naked. (Hey, whatever works.)

“The year before that, we were down 3-0 to the Mets and we ended up getting swept,” Rizzo said a couple of years later, referring to the 2015 N.L.C.S. “So the next year when we were down 3-1, it just kind of flipped. It was like: ‘No, we’re not doing this, we’re good, we’ve won three games in a row before. We’re going to take care of business and go to Cleveland.’”

When it was over, the last out of the World Series ended up in Rizzo’s glove. The Cubs had been waiting 108 years for that moment, and Rizzo was instrumental in making it happen. To him, the Yankees’ 11-year title drought must seem paltry.

Ken Blaze/USA Today Sports, via Reuters

Still, ending it this year will be a challenge. The Yankees are fourth in the race for two American League wild card spots and third in the A.L. East, far behind the Boston Red Sox and the Rays.

As the pennant race unfolds, the Yankees hope to add the right-handed pitchers Luis Severino and Corey Kluber, who are both recovering from arm injuries. But the Red Sox can counter that when they get the ace lefty Chris Sale back, and the Rays — well, the Rays always have some kind of witchcraft brewing. Last week they traded their leader in starts, Rich Hill, to the Mets, and on Thursday they traded their leader in saves, Diego Castillo, to Seattle. Chances are they’ll be fine, somehow.

In the wild card race, the Yankees are mainly chasing another low-payroll marvel trapped in a stadium they are desperate to leave: the Oakland Athletics. The A’s just traded with the Miami Marlins for outfielder Starling Marte, a veteran with speed and punch who is enjoying his best season. Oakland traded a promising young starter, Jesus Luzardo, to get him, but has gotten good work from another young starter, James Kaprielian.

Kaprielian, you may remember, was a first-round draft pick of the Yankees in 2015; two years later, the Yankees traded him at the deadline for Sonny Gray, who never quite fit in pinstripes. Deadline deals, indeed, can often come back to haunt teams, but the moment is all that matters.

This was Cashman’s moment to give the Yankees the left-handed thump they needed, and he did what he had to do.

Thunder trade 16th pick to Rockets for 2 future first-round picks - Welcome To Loud City

gamagana.blogspot.com

The Oklahoma City Thunder have agreed to trade the 16th overall pick to the Houston Rockets in exchange for two future first-round picks.

The picks are the Detroit Pistons’ 2022 first-round pick with the following protections: 1-16 in 2022, 1-18 in 2023, 1-18 in 2024, 1-13 in 2025, 1-11 in 2026, 1-9 2027.

The second pick is the Washington Wizards’ 2023 first-round pick with the following protections: 1-14 in 2023, 1-12 in 2024, 1-10 in 2025, 1-8 in 2026.

The Thunder will draft Alperen Sengun for the Rockets at 16.

An initial thought is that getting two future first-round pick for 16 is too good of a value to pass upon. The protections temper the excitement as it is a sexy pick is very unlikely, but it’s all about other teams thinking about how good of a pick it could turn out to be.

Many view the 19-year-old as a modern offensive big who excels at rebounding. His most noteworthy accolade was winning the Turkish League MVP last season.

Examining New Potential Deshaun Watson Trade Scenarios - Battle Red Blog

gamagana.blogspot.com

In possibly the most bizarre day in Houston Texans training camp history, fledgling head coach David Culley decided to line embattled quarterback Deshaun Watson up as a safety.

Culley’s handling of Watson in training camp doesn’t bode well for what fans can expect from the senior rookie head coach.

Since the smart thing to do (I know, I know, we’re talking McEasterby here, so ‘smart’ isn’t always a proper characterization...) is tuck Deshaun Watson away in bubble wrap and wait for the general manager to make a trade, that’s what a savvy head coach would do right now.

But, this is David ‘I cancelled mini camp after an historic level of roster churn’ Culley we’re talking about. Yes, the same guy who was surprised to learn young players benefit from practicing. So, why not have Watson line up as a safety? I mean, competition might reveal untapped potential, right? We have hybrid DE/LBs, why not a hybrid QB/FS?

Over at Complex.com, Ian Wharton put together a few viable trade scenarios for Watson that McEasterby should sign off on immediately if one materializes.

Let’s take a look:

Houston Texans Trade Deshaun Watson to the Miami Dolphins

Offer: QB Tua Tagovailoa, CB Xavien Howard, 2022 first-round pick (from 49ers) and 2023 first-round pick

Miami would vault from an up-and-coming team with a great defense to seeing their dreams as a contender come true. This trade would complete a massive overhaul under head coach Brian Flores. Moving Tua Tagovailoa, either to the Texans or being rerouted for Houston to collect more assets, for Watson removes any question marks about whether the Dolphins have what they need at quarterback to win big.

Watson would love Miami’s deep corps of receivers. DeVante Parker, Jaylen Waddle, Mike Gesicki, and reconnecting with Will Fuller would be the most dynamic and speed-oriented offense he’s been a part of throughout his career. Though Miami’s offensive line is still a project, Watson’s a master at overcoming issues along that unit. His ability to extend plays would immediately make Miami one of the scariest offenses in the NFL.

In return, Houston would get a quarterback they loved in the 2020 NFL Draft in Tagovailoa, a plethora of picks, and a superstar cornerback. Xavien Howard could immediately be the face of the defense or be peddled elsewhere for another draft pick. Houston’s rebuild would significantly benefit from taking Miami’s unique set of assets.

Howard recently requested a trade out of Miami, Houston desperately needs a CB1 and the Dolphins could certainly do worse than taking a flyer on Watson.

Howard’s comments regarding his recent contract sound eerily similar to the Why-did-Watson-sign-his-extension-then-want-out questions. This could certainly present an x-factor in this trade scenario. But, having Howard line up across from Bradley Roby, with Justin Reid and Deshaun Watson Eric Murray behind him in the safety positions, the Texans secondary is suddenly legit. Add that to the team of 10,000 linebackers and opposing offenses are suddenly forced to kill the Texans with a thousand cuts by running for short gains that lead to first downs repeatedly, instead of passing all over them as we saw in 2020.

Houston Texans Trade Deshaun Watson to the New York Giants

Offer: QB Daniel Jones, TE Evan Engram, 2022 first-round pick (from Bears), 2022 and 2023 first-round pick

Quietly, the Giants have assembled one of the stronger defenses in the league. Gambles on linebacker Blake Martinez and cornerback James Bradberry paid off handsomely as each had career 2020 seasons. Combined with a star-studded defensive line and high-end potential of edge rusher Azeez Ojulari and corner Adoree’ Jackson, this unit can be special.

The offense has similar highlights but one major concern: quarterback Daniel Jones. He’s been a turnover machine through two seasons with 29 fumbles and 22 interceptions. Imagine where this team would be if they could simply win the turnover battle.

That concern not only dissipates with Watson at the helm but becomes a strength for this explosive offense. Watson would have tremendous deep playmaking skill around him thanks to Kenny Golladay and Darius Slayton. He’d also benefit from Saquon Barkley’s return from an ACL tear.

The Giants would immediately become a second-tier NFC team with the potential to reach the Super Bowl.

Daniel Jones and another tight end aren’t nearly as exciting as Tua and Howard, if Pep Hamilton could bring Jones along, this might work out well. If nothing else, Jones, Davis Mills and Tyrod Taylor would give the Texans plenty of trade bait after they pick a QB in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Houston Texans Trade Deshaun Watson to the Denver Broncos

Offer: QB Drew Lock, CB Patrick Surtain II, WR Tim Patrick, 2022 and 2023 first-round pick, 2022 second-round pick

The best roster in the league simply needs a quarterback to make it competitive. Denver’s current options of Teddy Bridgewater and Drew Lock might get them to the playoffs, but surely won’t get them far beyond the Wild Card round. Deshaun Watson makes them a Super Bowl contender.

Denver has excellent receiving talent and a solid offensive line to surround Watson. They also have a tenacious defense loaded with playmakers. Head coach Vic Fangio could entrust the playmaking quarterback to run his offense with Pat Shurmer and focus on the defense.

The return for Houston has considerable upside. Lock would be a flier to develop at quarterback along with Davis Mills in 2021. Patrick Surtain profiles as a lockdown cornerback on a rookie deal. Tim Patrick is incredibly underrated and starting-caliber, but also won’t break the bank to extend if they choose.

Any mention of “quarterback” and “Denver Broncos” in the same breath triggers nightmares of [NAME REDACTED] in most Houston Texans fans, as it should. However, like Xavien Howard, landing a cornerback of Patrick Surtain’s skill level would go well with Roby and Reid. Drew Lock is another clipboard holder who may, or may not, push Davis Mills to grow up fast, when Mills isn’t running for his life that is...

Complex.com goes on to detail potential offers from the Philadelphia Eagles, Carolina Panthers and Washington Whatevers (read them all here) and an argument could be made for a few stalking horse teams such as the Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers.

However, the most intriguing for H-Town still seems to be the Dolphins and Broncos who offer the best package of young talent and future draft picks.

Hopefully, Culley doesn’t screw the pooch golden goose and Nick Caserio can make this trade happen sooner rather than later. They clearly have no intentions of using Watson as the QB1 in 2021, so best to move on now instead of risking injury or simply paying him to hang out with the defensive backs for the entire season.
