The 2021 season was no doubt one of the most exciting campaigns in the history of the Los Angeles Rams. LA entered the year as a clear Super Bowl favorite following a blockbuster trade for Matthew Stafford that offseason. Stafford guided the Rams to a 12-5 record in his first year under center, winning a championship in the friendly confines of SoFi Stadium.
Bleacher Report writer Gary Davenport took a look back at the 10 biggest NFL trades of the last decade. Los Angeles came away with a pair of moves that helped the franchise secure a win in Super Bowl LVI. Davenport re-graded each of those 10 trades and LA fared well in both. Here is what the B/R writer had to say about the Stafford trade:
“In the early-going, this was a trade that clearly favored the Rams—in his first season in Los Angeles, Stafford led the team to their first Super Bowl win. The gamble paid off right out of the gate—and no matter what happens from there, that can’t be discounted.
Since then though, the pendulum has swung. The previously durable Stafford has missed substantial time with injuries. Goff has resurrected his career, playing a big part in Detroit’s resurgence under head coach Dan Campbell.
The Lions used the picks obtained from L.A. (after some more machinations) to add a number of players, including wide receiver Jameson Williams, tight end Sam LaPorta and running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Detroit may well now have the best roster in the NFC.”
The Rams received an A- for the trade while the Lions earned an A, marking one of the rare win-win trades in NFL history. Despite winning a title in Year 1 with Stafford, Detroit deserved a slightly higher grade.
Their long-term outlook based on the picks received from LA has solidified them as an NFC power for years to come. Jared Goff also gets his chance at redemption after being cast aside by the team that drafted him. For a franchise once eternally doomed to football purgatory, it really doesn’t get any better than that.
GM Les Snead was quite active throughout the 2021 season and made another blockbuster move for future Hall of Famer Von Miller at the trade deadline. Davenport gave the Rams an A- for the transaction as the Broncos got a C.
“Miller logged five sacks over the final eight regular season games and then four more in the postseason, including two in the Rams win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI.
Miller was off to Buffalo the following offseason, and the players the Broncos acquired with the picks obtained in this deal (headlined by edge-rusher Nik Bonitto and linebacker Drew Sanders) haven’t been worldbeaters to this point in their professional careers.”
Miller ended up being a half-year rental for LA, yet the team would not have won the Super Bowl without his stellar play. Both of these trades panned out well for the Rams and fans should be eager to see what Les Snead has cooking next.
