The Vikings, who have been speculated to be a possible trade partner with the Patriots, would have to reportedly part with major draft capital.
If the Vikings are looking to acquire the third overall pick from the Patriots in the 2024 NFL Draft, it might take an unprecedented haul.
Minnesota, who’s been speculated as a possible trade partner with New England for the third pick, would have to “give up a lot more” than just three first-round picks in order to obtain the No. 3 pick, NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran said on his “Patriots Talk Podcast.”
“They as a team, collectively, understand what these three quarterbacks represent at the top of the draft,” Curran said.
Of course, those three quarterbacks are Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels. All three quarterbacks have been projected to be the top-three picks in the majority of mock drafts, with the Bears likely to select Williams.
That means the Patriots would likely be left with the last remaining player of the group with the third pick. As the Patriots might hold the final lottery ticket to draft one of those three quarterbacks, the Vikings emerged as a possible trade partner after they acquired a second first-round pick from the Texans in March, giving them the 11th and 23rd overall picks in April’s draft.
There still seems to be some belief though within league circles that the Patriots might trade down. The Patriots are “comfortable with [Jacoby Brissett] as a bridge starter playing some games next year” and “it’s not even a slam dunk they take a quarterback,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported.
“I have talked to a few teams that are drafting in the top 10-12 that wonder, if the quarterback they want isn’t there at No. 3, do they just take a Marvin Harrison Jr. [or] stockpile some picks?” Fowler said on “SportsCenter” Saturday.
So far, the Patriots are operating like a team that’s interested in a quarterback. After de facto general manager Eliot Wolf, head coach Jerod Mayo and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt attended the Pro Days of Maye, Daniels, and J.J. McCarthy, all three quarterbacks have taken or will take the trip to Foxborough to visit the Patriots. Maye visited the team Friday, while Daniels will reportedly visit New England next week and McCarthy will make the trip a week later.
Obviously, the Patriots doing their homework on the quarterback prospects doesn’t mean that they will wind up taking a quarterback. The Commanders could, theoretically, draft the Patriots’ preferred quarterback from the group, which could cause them to want to trade down.
Outside of the Vikings, the Giants are another possible trade suitor for the Patriots if they want to move the third pick. New York “would consider making an aggressive offer” to New England if Maye is available with the third pick, Fox Sports’ Ralph Vacchiano reported Friday. The Giants hold the sixth pick in the draft, so it probably wouldn’t cost as much as it would for the Vikings to get the third pick from the Patriots.
So, even with the draft less than three weeks away, there’s still some uncertainty and moving parts to figure out beyond what the Bears will do with the first pick.
