Zach Wilson's tenure with the New York Jets seems likely to end at some point this offseason, but the former No. 2 overall pick may not have to wait long to find a new home.
Per The Athletic's Mike Jones, there's a belief among some rival talent evaluators Wilson will get picked up as a "backup/reclamation project" if he gets released by the Jets.
The Jets would certainly prefer to find a trade partner for Wilson so they can recoup an asset for a player they used a premium draft pick on three years ago, but that market has been difficult to develop.
ESPN's Rich Cimini reported on Sunday the trade market "hasn't been kind" to the Jets in their attempts to shop Wilson.
This isn't necessarily unique to Wilson. Mac Jones and Justin Fields, who were part of the same 2021 draft class as Wilson, have been traded this offseason for sixth-round draft picks.
Jones was dealt to the Jacksonville Jaguars by the New England Patriots for a 2024 sixth-rounder. Fields was traded by the Chicago Bears to the Pittsburgh Steelers conditional sixth-round pick in 2025 that can become a fourth-rounder based on playing time.
The most valuable quarterback trade from that class involved Trey Lance after he had been demoted to the No. 3 spot on the depth chart by the San Francisco 49ers. The Niners were able to land a 2024 fourth-round pick from the Dallas Cowboys for Lance in August.
Jets general manager Joe Douglas told reporters on Feb. 28 he gave Wilson's agents permission to seek a trade. It was an expected outcome, but there's been no indication anything is even being discussed at this point.
Wilson has a $5.5 million guaranteed salary in 2024, but his deal only includes a $1.1 million base salary. The Jets can save $5.5 million against the cap if they trade him this offseason.
If the Jets have to release Wilson, they will take on an $11.2 million dead-cap charge.
Given Wilson's age (24) and pre-draft pedigree, it's not a surprise that teams looking for a backup might view him favorably if they can sign him for little money. He's unlikely to suddenly become a viable starter in the NFL, but a fresh start could be exactly what he needs after three disappointing years in New York.
