The New York Knicks are "actively fielding offers" for guard Quentin Grimes, according to The Athletic's Fred Katz.
"The approach signals a change from only a year or two ago when the Knicks clutched onto Grimes in trade talks," Katz wrote.
Grimes has seen his playing time decline from 29.9 minutes per game in 2022-23 to 19.8 this year. New York's 146-122 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Dec. 5 was the last time he was in the starting lineup.
This doesn't appear to be foreshadowing a major trade for the Knicks ahead of the Feb. 8 deadline. Katz reported their general aim is to acquire a star-level talent but that the front office is looking toward the summer for that to become a realistic possibility.
Absent a sizable return, plenty of fans would question the logic of dealing Grimes.
The 23-year-old averaged 11.3 points and was a 38.6 percent three-point shooter last year as the Knicks earned a playoff berth. Even assuming his role would lessen a bit as the franchise strengthens its roster, he has remained effective off the bench. His long-range shooting has improved slightly (39.2 percent), and he's averaging 12.6 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per 36 minutes, according to Basketball Reference.
Granted, Grimes acknowledged in December he was frustrated with what he thought was a quick hook from head coach Tom Thibodeau.
"It feels like if I don't hit the shot, I'm coming out," he told reporters. "So every shot I shoot probably weighs like 100 pounds if I don't make it, and our defense, it ain't cutting it, so I know I ain't going back in."
Grimes is under team control for only one more year as well. Now or the summer is the time for New York to move on if the front office has any reservations about extending his contract.
