Welcome to Week 1 of the 2023 fantasy football season. Regardless of how good your team may be, never stop searching for ways to improve your roster. The wide receiver position has become the backbone of fantasy rosters in recent years, so it’s important to have reliable ones you can count on. Here are a few undervalued WRs to buy low and overvalued WRs to sell high.

What WRs Should You Trade for in Fantasy Football?
Jaxon Smith-Njigba, WR, Seattle Seahawks
Perhaps this is just me overreacting to a small sample size of the drafts I’ve done, but it does appear as if there is currently a fear of overpaying for a rookie dealing with a wrist injury.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba already returned to practice. We don’t know for sure whether he’ll play in Week 1, but even if he doesn’t, it sure looks like he won’t miss more than a week or two.
The Seattle Seahawks have a pass-first, explosive offense. At one point, JSN was pushing top 30 value. Now, he’s being treated more like a WR4. Buy low now before the positive reports on his health drive his price back up.
Courtland Sutton, WR, Denver Broncos
Fantasy football is all about making the right moves at the right time. There may very well be a time to sell Courtland Sutton. But right now, buy, buy, buy!

Sutton admittedly did not play well last season, but he’s been a borderline WR1 when Jerry Jeudy doesn’t play. In nine games without Jeudy over the past two seasons, Sutton has averaged 15.4 ppg.
Jeudy is going to miss at least the first couple of weeks of the season and perhaps as many as six. Sutton is being treated like a low-end WR3, but he could provide near-WR1 value for the first third of the season. Buy him now and then look to sell as Jeudy nears his return.
What WRs Should You Trade Away in Fantasy Football?
Cooper Kupp, WR, Los Angeles Rams
This is how it starts for players over 30, specifically wide receivers. There’s no doubt in my mind that Cooper Kupp will be the top WR in fantasy when on the field. I just don’t believe he will stay on the field.
His 2022 season ended prematurely with an ankle injury that required surgery. Now, Kupp is dealing with a hamstring strain that he just can’t seem to shake.
This is what happens to players at this age. It may seem arbitrary, but it’s not. The body cannot heal as quickly, and players can’t push through nagging injuries as well.

The main concern I have with Kupp is not that he’s going to miss a huge chunk of the season because of this injury but rather his offensive situation. If the Los Angeles Rams were projected to be a competitive team, I’d be more confident in him returning. However, they’re projected to lose 10+ games and not be in playoff contention.
If Kupp suffers a minor setback during the middle of the season when the team is 3-8, are they really going to bring him back?
Kupp is a ticking time bomb if the Rams are as bad as most think they will be. As a result, I’m fading him.
Currently, Kupp’s value hasn’t taken too much of a hit because of this setback with his hamstring. At this point, if you could sell him for a high-end WR2 with an additional player, I would do it.
Amari Cooper, WR, Cleveland Browns
In a better situation, Amari Cooper might be a second-round player. But he’s in Cleveland, and that’s what we have to deal with.
Last year, Cooper was one of the best values in fantasy drafts, averaging 14.5 PPR fantasy points per game. His value was depressed due to fears about his quarterback play with Jacoby Brissett starting, but he was able to overcome them and post a mid-WR2 season.
This year, Cooper is being valued about where he finished last season. The expectation is that Deshaun Watson gives him a floor of production around what Cooper did last year, with a WR1 ceiling.
For starters, Cooper has been in the league for eight years and has never finished as a WR1. I don’t expect that to change now.
Second, I’m very, very concerned about Watson. He didn’t play well upon his return last season, which was understandable, given the layoff. But he’s also looked awful in the preseason to the point where I’m worried he’s just not good anymore.
If you drafted Cooper in the late third or early fourth round, now may be the time to get out before the secret of Watson’s decline is out there for all to see.

Should You Trade Cooper Kupp for DeVonta Smith?
Is there any player more difficult to figure out than Cooper Kupp? When healthy, he’s the best WR in fantasy. But he’s not healthy and hasn’t been for quite some time now. I am willing to take risks in fantasy football when it comes to breakouts, but not when it comes to health.
I don’t believe we can predict injury, but this is a case of Kupp already being hurt. You are better off ridding yourself of the headache that is the hamstring of a 30-year-old WR and taking the more secure option in an elite offense in DeVonta Smith.
Should You Trade Christian Kirk for Brandon Aiyuk?
Here we have two receivers that both fall into that group of incredibly flat Round 4-6 players. I ranked Christian Kirk ahead of Brandon Aiyuk, but the reality is that I value them pretty similarly.
If you are concerned about Kirk not playing in three-receiver sets, there’s no harm in pivoting to Aiyuk. If you are concerned about the abundance of weapons in the San Francisco 49ers offense capping Aiyuk’s offense, there’s no harm in pivoting to Kirk. As much as I’d love to give a definitive answer, this one is a wash for me.
Should You Trade Amari Cooper for Mike Williams?
This is a really tricky one. On the one hand, I am very down on the Browns’ offense because Deshaun Watson struggled mightily in his return last season, and I haven’t liked what I’ve seen in the preseason. On the other hand, Mike Williams is in an explosive Los Angeles Chargers offense, but the team just drafted Quentin Johnston, who is essentially a younger, more explosive version of Big Mike.
In the end, Amari Cooper is a proven commodity. Williams has a higher ceiling but a much lower floor. The two were actually not particularly close in my rankings. Therefore, I would take the Cooper side of this one.
