Indonesia's trade surplus narrowed in July amid stronger imports.

Southeast Asia's largest economy recorded a trade surplus of $1.31 billion, narrowing from $3.45 billion in June, Indonesia's statistics agency said Tuesday. The country had trade surpluses with India, the U.S. and the Philippines.

July exports rose 1.36% from the previous month to $20.88 billion amid higher shipments of nickel and goods. Compared with a year earlier, exports were 18.03% lower.

July imports increased 14.10% from a month earlier to $19.57 billion. Oil and gas imports increased 40.94% from June, while inbound non-oil shipments rose 10.10%, driven by higher electrical machinery and equipment imports.

Imports declined 8.32% from a year earlier, the agency said.
