The Golden State Warriors are reportedly expected to meet with Jonathan Kuminga to discuss the second-year forward's long-term future with the franchise this offseason.
Anthony Slater and Shams Charania of The Athletic reported Kuminga grew frustrated in the playoffs as his role dwindled and would prefer a trade if he's not going to have a "full-time role" next season.
Kuminga showed flashes of promise during his second NBA season but is an awkward lineup fit next to Draymond Green and Kevon Looney because they are all non-shooters.
The Warriors saw Kuminga's potential during a 21-game stretch when Andrew Wiggins was out with a personal issue. He averaged 13.2 points in 24.2 minutes per game while providing athleticism on the perimeter on both ends of the floor.
The Warriors are planning a "retooling" of their rotation this summer, according to Slater and Charania, but it's unclear how Kuminga will fit into the picture. Tim Kawakami of The Athletic reported it's unlikely Warriors brass winds up trading Kuminga, but he could be the team's top trade chip.
Jordan Poole could see himself traded less than a year after signing a four-year, $140 million contract, but Poole's regression in the 2022-23 season could lead to teams wanting a piece like Kuminga in order to take on his contract.
With Green hitting free agency and Klay Thompson wanting a contract extension before his own free agency in 2024, there's more questions than answers as the Warriors head into the offseason. The NBA's new collective bargaining agreement will also be restrictive to a team with an unlimited budget like Golden State.
