Indonesia's trade surplus narrowed in March, as imports rose during the month.

The Southeast Asian country recorded a trade surplus of $2.91 billion in March, narrower than the $5.48 billion surplus posted the prior month.

A poll of analysts by The Wall Street Journal had tipped a $4.30 billion surplus.

Indonesia recorded trade surpluses with the U.S., India, and the Philippines, says Imam Machdi, a deputy of the country's statistics department.

In March, exports rose 10% from the previous month to $23.50 billion, mostly due to higher mining exports.

Compared with a year earlier, Indonesia's March exports were 11% lower.

The Southeast Asian country's imports gained 29% from a month ago to $20.59 billion in March, led by imports of capital goods.

Imports shrunk 6.3% on year, the statistics agency said.
