Now that 2023 is here, it’s time to ponder a mock trade for the Brooklyn Nets and evaluate its viability for the franchise. In an article published earlier this week by Hoopshabit.com, there was a hypothetical trade proposed that could be an attempt in making the Nets a better team.
Before we get into the mock trade, it should be noted that the Nets are currently on an 11-game winning streak and have won 11 of their past 12 games. In the team’s most recent game, a 123-106 win over the Charlotte Hornets on New Years Eve, the Nets had their fourth wire-to-wire win this season.
Against the Hornets, Brooklyn took care of business from the opening tip and led by as many as 22 points in the contest. However, Charlotte out-rebounded the Nets and was able to score at will in the paint. Even though starting center Nic Claxton has been great for the Nets this season, he is the team’s only true big. With that being said, here’s the mock trade:
Mock trade
Nets receive: Jakob Poeltl
Spurs receive: Nets’ 2023 first-round pick, 2028 top-10 protected first-round pick, and Seth Curry
Should the Nets do this trade?
Poeltl would be a nice addition to the Nets in many ways. For one, he would be another true big that the Nets can turn to when Claxton is not playing. For another, Poeltl is one of the better defensive bigs in the NBA as he is 17th in the league in rebounds per game (9.3) and 18th in blocks per game (1.2). For the games that Brooklyn has to face bigger teams, such as the Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers, Poeltl would be able to help Claxton compete with the size differential between the two teams. Ultimately, with the success the Nets have been having recently, it’s arguable that Brooklyn doesn’t need another true big. Poeltl couldn’t hurt however so if this trade ever ends up being real, the Nets should do the deal.
What hoopshabit.com thinks
“Losing an elite shooter of the caliber of Seth Curry would sting. However, the Nets are one of the few teams in the league that have a plethora of shooters and can afford to trade away one of the best three-point shooters in the league. While not a household name, Jakob Poeltl has been one of the best rim protectors over the past few years. Even though his shaky free-throw shooting may make it difficult to play him in closing lineups, especially next to Ben Simmons, His elite rim protection and rebounding will compensate for his poor free-throw shooting. By adding Poeltl, the Nets would be able to address their defensive problems and could put themselves back in the mix as a potential title contender.”
