As the NBA trade deadline approaches, news continues to come in about which moves certain teams are looking to make. As we know, the Minnesota Timberwolves are looking for the right deal for D’Angelo Russell.
With Russell’s contract up at the end of this season, the Timberwolves are unlikely to want to sign him to a new one. The team that has been most frequently mentioned as being interested in trading with the Wolves for Russell is the Miami Heat.
The team from South Beach showed initial interest in acquiring D-Lo last month, and potential trade proposals have been flying around ever since. With the latest news report from the Heat, things could be moving more and more in the direction of a trade with Minnesota.
The rumor had already been floated that the Heat could be looking to trade Kyle Lowry, but a report from Friday confirmed that Miami is indeed hoping to shed their starting point guard’s salary before the deadline.
The latest report from Miami could indicate a trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves is imminent.
Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today was the latest source to reveal that the Timberwolves and Heat have once again been involved in trade talks centered around Lowry. With multiple sources confirming the two teams’ involvement leading up to the deadline for several weeks, it appears a deal could be closer to happening than we initially believed.
A potential deal between the Wolves and Heat would likely involve several players and/or picks, but in all likelihood, the big exchange would be with D’Angelo Russell and Kyle Lowry. Dunking With Wolves’ own Josh Cornelissen recently examined the details and ramifications of such a deal.
Moving off of D’Angelo Russell’s contract would be the obvious move to make for the Timberwolves, but bringing in Kyle Lowry might not be such a bad idea either. Though his age will scare some fans, Lowry is a floor general that knows what it takes to win on the biggest stage. He still has one more year left on his contract, so the Wolves would have plenty of time to determine Lowry’s fit with this team.
His basketball IQ and skill as a distributor would make him an excellent fit next to young stars like Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels. With Minnesota in win-now mode, they might be wise to pick up a veteran like Lowry as they continue to improve their playoff positioning.
