The NFL’s trade deadline is fast approaching (Nov. 1), and there’s already been some movement, including Christian McCaffrey being dealt to the Cardinals.
While the Bears aren’t contending for anything this season — other than a top-10 draft pick — there’s reasons to believe they could be sellers ahead of the deadline.
General manager Ryan Poles spent the offseason completely overhauling the roster to jump-start a rebuild. He’ll have north of $100 million and a nearly-full arsenal of draft picks (minus a sixth-rounder). But Poles has already shown that he’s always looking to acquire additional draft capital, which include moving some expensive veterans or future free agents.
With that in mind, here’s a look at four Bears players who could be on the trade block ahead of the deadline:
DE Robert Quinn
Robert Quinn is the most likely option to be dealt ahead of the trade deadline. Quinn is coming off one of his best seasons, where he had a franchise-record 18.5 sacks during a Pro Bowl and All-Pro year in 2021. But he’s gotten off to a slow start this season, as he has just one sack through six games.
There’s a report that the Bears are currently shopping Quinn, and it’s been documented that they were trying to deal him even before the start of the regular season. As Poles looks to get expensive contracts off the books, as evidenced by him dealing Khalil Mack in the offseason, Quinn is certainly the name to watch.
LB Roquan Smith
Roquan Smith had very public contract negotiations this offseason. Smith is in the final year of his rookie deal, and it’s no secret that things got ugly during negotiations to the point where Smith requested a trade during the summer. Smith believes he deserves more than he was offered, and both sides agreed to look forward to the season and pause negotiations.
Surely a contending team would be interested in a top linebacker like Smith, even if he is in the final year of his rookie deal, which means a potential team would have to sign him to an extension. This one doesn’t seem as likely considering Poles has made it clear that he wants to sign Smith to an extension, despite both sides failing to agree to terms. At this point, the most likely outcome is the Bears place the franchise tag on him.
RB David Montgomery
David Montgomery has been the most consistent player on offense for the Bears since he was drafted in 2019. Montgomery is the final year of his rookie deal, and Chicago could certainly look to move on from him. So, if that’s the case, perhaps Poles could land some sort of draft compensation for Montgomery.
But this all depends on a couple of things. First, whether Montgomery is part of Chicago’s future plans, as Poles could surely re-sign him to a team-friendly deal in the offseason. While the Bears also have Khalil Herbert, Montgomery is a more all-around back, where his blocking skills are superior to Herbert’s. But even if Chicago is prepared to let Montgomery walk in free agency, there would have to be a team that’s willing to send draft capital and sign Montgomery to an extension — unless they’re looking to rent him for the rest of the year. At this point, a Montgomery trade doesn’t seem likely.
FS Eddie Jackson
Another name that could be on the trade block is Eddie Jackson, who’s carved out a nice role for himself in this Bears defense. Jackson has been arguably Chicago’s best defender this season with three interceptions in six games. Jackson and rookie Jaquan Brisker have a nice rapport in the secondary. And there could be some contending teams looking to add a playmaking safety to the mix.
While it would suck for Jackson to leave amid a comeback season, he fits the mold of Poles looking to cut some of those expensive contracts. Jackson has the second-highest cap hit at $15.09 million in 2022, but a trade would only cost around $4 million in dead cap. Although, considering how Jackson has found new life in this Matt Eberflus defense, it’s hard to imagine he gets traded.
