The Carolina Panthers are reportedly shopping Sam Darnold. Should the New England Patriots think about trading for the controversial player?
It appears as if the Carolina Panthers are ready to end their Sam Darnold experiment. The team is reportedly shopping the fifth year player, but teams haven’t been willing to take on his salary, which is nearly $20 million. Should the New England Patriots consider making a deal to acquire Darnold?
Bailey Zappe hasn’t done much in training camp and was likely going to be the QB3 on the roster anyway.
With Brian Hoyer still missing from practice, Zappe has gotten the extra reps, but it’s gone about as well as can be expected from a rookie.
However, I do think there is a scenario where the Patriots could potentially make a deal for Darnold.
Firstly, the Panthers would have to eat most of his salary in a trade. That’s a given.
Secondly, it won’t cost a ton at all to acquire Darnold, who only has two more career touchdown passes than interceptions.
Thirdly, Darnold could be a logical backup option with Hoyer still gone and Zappe still raw.
The former USC product has had spurts of good football during his career, which is the story for many quarterbacks who usually end up not good enough to start in the NFL. He’s got the arm talent, mobility, and size that a franchise quarterback needs, but he’s also had to deal with some less than ideal coaching situations.
Adam Gase didn’t do him any favors when he was a Jet, and Matt Rhule doesn’t appear to know what he’s doing in Carolina.
In the very off chance that Mac Jones falters in year two, the team could turn to Darnold to potentially get one last bit of hope out of him.
He’s only 25 going into his fifth year, so he’s still very young.
Sam Darnold may end up being a career backup, and I think he already has one foot in that door. He is a unique situation, though.
I don’t think people realize how awful of a hand he got dealt in Carolina and in New York.
The New England Patriots do usually boast one of the best coaching staffs in the NFL year after year, and if Darnold can accept being a backup, perhaps he then becomes more likely to learn from the staff and Mac Jones, who might be one of the smartest quarterbacks in the NFL.
This also could be a final act of sorts for Bill Belichick, who could always retire soon.
Playing in the Patriots’ offense is usually marked by saying “the system.” Some may say that Tom Brady and Mac Jones were/are products of this magical system that the Patriots run.
