The Buccaneers didn’t hide their feelings towards Antonio Gibson during the 2020 NFL Draft. Those feelings could bring another running back and pass-catcher to Tampa.
The Buccaneers are in a unique position with their running backs going forward. Leonard Fournette and Rachaad White look good to go for the season.
Ke’Shawn Vaughn has looked good during the preseason, but will he be able to catch the ball well enough during the regular season to stay on the field? In addition to Vaughn, can Giovani Bernard stay healthy?
These questions are more than fair for a team that should have some very lofty goals for the 2022 season, and just being complacent is never the best way to go about these things.
The Buccaneers should always be looking to upgrade wherever possible, and that could bring their attention to Washington Commanders running back Antonio Gibson.
Gibson has been a bit of a roller coaster during his time in the NFL. The good has been 2,373 total yards and 21 total touchdowns in two years. However, Gibson does have a pretty substantial issue with fumbling.
Seven fumbles in two years is part of the reason why Gibson is apparently being replaced in the Washington offense. Gibson is spending more and more time on special teams and with the backups as the preseason progresses, and the Bucs could use this to their advantage.
Gibson needs a change of scenery. The Buccaneers could always use weapons for Tom Brady. It also helps that Gibson has a college history on special teams.
The Bucs trading for Gibson would give Tom Brady another weapon, provides more concrete depth on the running back depth chart in the event of an injury, and could help move the team towards solving their issues on the return side of things for their special teams unit.
It feels like it should be crazy for the Commanders to part with a guy that obviously still has so much upside, but the Bucs just asking wouldn’t be a bad move when it would bring in a player that the coaching staff already liked a few years ago.
Calling never hurts.
