The New York Giants will almost certainly explore the trade market this offseason, but the idea will be to trade away high-priced players to free up a bit of cap space.

However, general manager Joe Schoen cautions that he’s open to just about everything. And that could include acquiring players via trade as well.

Although far more unlikely than, say, shipping cornerback James Bradberry off for some addition draft assets, the Giants could also rely on the trade market to help restock their depleted roster. And with Sterling Shepard recently asked to take a pay cut and Darius Slayton a potential cap casualty, might New York look at the trade market for wide receiver reinforcements?

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Cole Beasley recently requested a trade and reuniting with Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll makes some sense.

“The dude’s an incredible coach, probably the best OC I’ve ever played for — not just schematically but as a person, too,” Beasley once said of Daboll. “The mentality he brings to the offense is incredible. He’s just like one of the dogs out there, too. He thinks that way. Any time you’ve got a guy like that leading you it makes it fun to go play.”

Daboll often shared praise for Beasley throughout their time in Buffalo as well.

But the problem with Beasley is obvious: he’s due a salary of $4.9 million in 2022, and that accounts for a total cap hit of $7.6 million. So when considering that Slayton might be a cap casualty at a cap hit of just $2.6 million, it’s hard to envision a scenario in which the Giants take on an additional $5 million for Beasley.

If the Bills can’t find a trade partner for Beasley, it’s possible they end up releasing him outright. In that scenario, perhaps the Giants swoop in and the two can make a deal — after all, Beasley said last season he’s no longer playing football for the money.

The 32-year-old Beasley has appeared in 149 career regular season games (50 starts), hauling in 550 receptions for 5,709 yards and 34 touchdowns. He can also serve as a punt returner.
