Partial lunar eclipse to occur early Friday morning - KLKN

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Our next full moon occurs early Friday morning around 3 AM, and there’s something special about this one. Friday morning’s full moon will feature a partial lunar eclipse.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through Earth’s shadow, where Earth’s shadow attempts to obscure the Moon.

The Moon often takes on a reddish appearance during these events. Although Earth’s shadow blocks most sunlight from reaching the Moon, some red light is able to survive. This is because Earth’s atmosphere scatters away most other colors, leaving red light able to pass around the edges of the Earth and head towards the Moon.

Friday morning’s lunar eclipse is not a total lunar eclipse, meaning that only part of the Moon will enter Earth’s shadow. However, it will be close. According to NASA, nearly 99% of the Moon will enter into Earth’s full shadow.

The following is how Friday morning’s lunar eclipse might appear in Lincoln if skies remain clear. Keep in mind that we’re expecting partly to mostly cloudy skies late Thursday and into Friday.

November 19th, 2021 Lunar Eclipse

The Moon enters Earth’s full shadow at 1:18 AM Friday, kickstarting the partial lunar eclipse. Beyond this point, the Moon will appear as if a “bite” is being taken out of it. The maximum eclipse, the point where the Moon is most obscured, occurs around 3:02 AM. The Moon will remain in Earth’s full shadow until 4:47 AM, ending the partial lunar eclipse.

From start to finish, the partial lunar eclipse will last 3 hours, 28 minutes, and 23 seconds.

If you are seeking to observe this lunar eclipse, you’ll have to either stay up late or wake up early. In addition, clouds will likely make viewing the eclipse difficult in Lincoln. Overall, it’s not the best viewing opportunity.

Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are more common. Lincoln’s next lunar eclipse will occur on May 15-16th, 2022. That one will be a total lunar eclipse where 100% of the Moon enters Earth’s shadow.
