Beirut-Lebanon’s major state power companies have supplied the country’s grid for about two hours, locals told CNN on Sunday.

On Saturday, Lebanese energy minister Walid Fayad told CNN Arabic that reports of a complete power outage in the country were “exaggerated” and “the situation is not worse than before.”

Lebanon’s state-owned utility has been supplying only two hours a day since July due to a serious fuel shortage that has plunged most of the country into the dark.

Backup generators, which the country has long relied on for power outages that normally last three hours a day, have begun to distribute electricity, reducing most supplies by more than 12 hours a day. Many in Lebanon have stopped subscribing to generators due to soaring electricity prices.

The country’s new government, formed by Prime Minister Najib Mikati in September, is trying to negotiate Egypt’s gas supply via Jordan with Jordan to mitigate the fuel crisis. Mr Fayad told CNN that the negotiations went “significantly.”

Iran-backed Hezbollah has also facilitated multiple fuel transports from Iran. It seeks to circumvent US sanctions on Tehran by transporting fuel from the Syrian port city of Baniyas to Lebanon.
