When Nicholas moved violently along the Texas coast, the school was closed and storm surge surveillance and warnings ran across the Gulf.

With a continuous wind of 60 mph, Nicholas headed north at 2:00 EST, centered about 70 mph south-southeast of Port Alansus, Texas. Nicholas was predicted to travel ashore along the southern or central coast of Texas on Monday afternoon or evening.

“Today, strengthening is expected and Nicholas could reach the northwestern Gulf Coast as a hurricane,” said Eric Blake, senior specialist at the National Hurricane Center. He said weakening was expected on Tuesday and Wednesday as the storm moved over land.

AccuWeather meteorologist Ryan Adamson was more optimistic and suggested that the storm would not reach the strength of the hurricane as it spends only a limited amount of time in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. It is a continuous wind of at least 74 mph.
