Students will enter yet another grade during the pandemic, as the first day of school arrives in just a few days. The SWFL school district is implementing the COVID-19 Safety Protocol this year to ensure the safety of children.
However, parents are still worried about the virus and its potential effects on the education of their children.
Last year, constant uncertainty was a challenge for many students. Parents want history not to repeat.
With each new grade, there is excitement and a new start. However, as the number of cases of COVID-19 continues to increase, some people feel that nothing has changed.
Olivia Angeles has two children. “It’s as scary as last year,” said Angeles.
She is preparing her 10-year-old son Liam and 5-year-old daughter Sophia for their first day at Vineyards Elementary School in Naples.
This will give Liam an opportunity to recover academically after the tough years of last year. “I wasn’t up to date on how his progress was progressing, and I didn’t say ah my goodness was bad until I received his year-end report card,” Angeles said. Said.
She wanted to communicate more with her son’s teacher, but she knew last year that everyone was experiencing difficult times. Now that we are in another grade, teachers say they expect some degree of normality, especially for students.
Alyssa Totez is a 5th grade teacher at Oceana Elementary School. “We want our kids to be in school, and we’ll build that community here, feel like they belong somewhere, and regain their social interaction. It can be strengthened, which is very important for children, “Totes said.
Angels says her children will start this year without a mask. But after being hospitalized with COVID-19 in July 2020, she says it was a particularly difficult decision.
“I’m scared, but after all, I know they want to be as normal as possible. I try not to be afraid of them,” she said.
Angels says he will try out masked children, at least for the first semester, and see what happens. But she wants them to be honest with her so that if they feel sick they can deal with it immediately.
