Tomorrow at 4 PM ET, the Green Bay Packers roster will need to be five players lighter than it started this morning, due to the NFL’s cutdown rules and schedule. The team started to get the ball rolling today with the release of 2020 draft pick linebacker Kamal Martin, who started six games for Green Bay as a rookie fifth-rounder last season. They then announced that tight end Daniel Crawford, who was used as a reserve blocking tight end and fullback, was also released.
The Packers’ third of five necessary moves, according to reporter Aaron Wilson, is a trade of cornerback Ka’Dar Hollman to the Houston Texans. Hollman, a 2019 sixth-round pick, played in 18 games and made one start in his two regular seasons with Green Bay. As recently as last Saturday, Hollman was making some plays in tight coverage, but he has seemingly fallen down the pecking order with the recently-traded-for Isaac Yiadom, Kabion Ento, and rookie Shemar Jean-Charles earning more preseason snaps at cornerback than he did last weekend.
With the trade of Hollman, the Packers now have seven cornerbacks on the roster. Jaire Alexander and Kevin King are the outside cornerback starters on the team with rookie first-round pick Eric Stokes as the first boundary cornerback off of the bench. Yiadom and Ento, who is ascending as his conversion from wide receiver seems to be sticking, are the reserve boundary corners behind the top three. Chandon Sullivan is the starting slotback with Jean-Charles serving as his backup.
At this time, compensation in return for Hollman has yet to be announced.
UPDATE: The Texans are sending a 2022 seventh-round draft pick to the Packers in exchange for Hollman, according to ESPN’s Field Yates. That pick is the Chicago Bears’ 7th-rounder, which Chicago sent to Houston along with wide receiver Anthony Miller in a trade earlier this summer.
In total, the Packers and Texans have now made two trades this summer, with the Packers acquiring this 7th-round pick and Randall Cobb while the Texans receive Hollman and a 6th-round pick.
