California utility Pacific Gas & Electric has announced plans to bury 10,000 miles of power lines to prevent fires caused by falling trees.
The cost of filling 10% of a company’s power lines can be between $ 15 billion and $ 30 billion. The cost was expected to be passed on to PG & E’s customers, who are already paying for the highest electricity prices in the country.
The announcement was made after the company stated that a tree rush into the power line could have caused a major fire.
Inadequate PG & E equipment was accused of catastrophic fires in 2017 and 2019, leading to the company’s bankruptcy filing in 2019.
Since breaking out of bankruptcy, the company has faced criticism that it hasn’t addressed the problem of trees near power lines and has promised to fix it.
