Hurricanes trade Warren Foegele to Edmonton Oilers for Ethan Bear - Canes Country

gamagana.blogspot.com

It’s been speculated throughout the offseason that, with RFA forward Warren Foegele up for arbitration and wanting more money/opportunity, the Hurricanes would move on. That’s indeed going to be the case, as the team is trading his RFA rights to the Edmonton Oilers for defenseman Ethan Bear.

Bear fills a need for the Hurricanes on the right side of the blue line reportedly out the door. He’s coming off a season that saw him post two goals and eight points in 43 games. He put up five goals and 21 points in 71 games in 2019-20, and offers plenty of upside.

He’s got one year left on his deal at $2 million, after which he’ll be an RFA.

Foegele, a third-round pick of the Hurricanes in the 2014 draft, posted 35 goals and 68 points in 200 career games as a Hurricane. A two-way forward with strong penalty-killing abilities, Foegele commonly skated on Jordan Staal’s left wing.

Foegele’s best regular season in Carolina was his second, 2019-20, as he put up 13 goals and 30 points in 68 games. He put up 10 and 20 in 53 games last year. The highlight of his time in Carolina, however, was his play in his first postseason, the team’s 2019 run to the Eastern Conference Final, as he tallied five goals and nine points in 15 games and scored some big goals in the first round win over the Washington Capitals.

The Hurricanes’ official release on the trade follows:

Foegele traded to Edmonton

RALEIGH, NC – Don Waddell, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has acquired defenseman Ethan Bear from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for forward Warren Foegele.

“Ethan is a young, right-shot defenseman with offensive upside,” said Waddell. “We’re excited to add him to our team as he continues to grow as an NHL player.”

Bear, 24, registered eight points (2g, 6a) in 43 games with the Oilers in 2020-21. The 5’11”, 197-pound blueliner has tallied 33 points (8g, 25a) in 132 career NHL games, all with Edmonton. He skated in 89 American Hockey League games over two seasons with Bakersfield from 2017-19, earning 49 points (12g, 37a). Bear posted 192 points (66g, 126a) in 264 Western Hockey League games with Seattle from 2013-17. He has represented Canada internationally at the 2015 IIHF World Under-18 Championship in 2015, winning bronze. The Regina, Sask., native was selected by the Oilers in the fifth round, 124th overall of the 2015 NHL Draft.
