E-scooter injuries are most likely to occur on weekends, and after taking risks with alcohol fuels such as curb jumps, an analysis of the patterns and timing of these injuries in a European city is revealed. Emergency medicine journal..

According to researchers, reducing the risk of injury requires stricter regulations on the use of electric scooters and technical changes in their design.

E-scooters have become popular in major European cities since their first license in June 2019. ..

Berlin is visited by 3.8 million inhabitants and about 14 million tourists each year. Manufacturer as a test site for short-distance travel (“micromobility”). And in September 2019, more than 11,000 electric scooters began to be distributed in the city.

Few studies have investigated patterns of injury associated with the use of electric scooters in European cities. To bridge this knowledge gap, researchers examined electric scooter injuries treated in four emergency departments in central Berlin for six months from June to December 2019.

In two emergency departments I was asked to fill out a questionnaire about the possible causes of the incident. In the case of an electronic scooter, whether you have a driver’s license, whether you were drinking alcohol before the incident, and whether you were wearing a helmet.

During the 6-month study period, 248 patients were treated in four emergency departments after suffering an electric scooter injury.

The average age of riders is 29, but ranges from 5 to 81 years, with most injuries occurring between the ages of 26 and 40. More than half (52%) of the patients were male. Nearly 6 out of 10 (58%) were Berliners. 41% were tourists.

Most incidents (75%) occurred between July and September and peaked between noon and 18:00 (40%) and between 18:00 and midnight (29%).

Electric scooters were also more injured on weekends (58%) than on weekdays. In 20 patients (8%), the incident occurred on their way to work.

The main causes of injury were lack of attention, one-handed driving, curb jumps, inexperience, or falling from the scooter due to loss of control due to overspeeding.

He has also been injured by touching the sharp edges and protruding screws of an electric scooter when accelerating, kicking off the ground, or breaking.

In 12 cases (5%), pedestrians were injured by being hit by an electric scooter (9) or stumbling on a parked vehicle (3).

Leg and arm injuries were recorded in 178 patients, accounting for most (72%) of the injuries. Thirteen of 17 patients with lower limb fractures required surgery. However, most of the foot injuries were soft tissue injuries.

Arms were more likely to fracture than legs (17% vs. 6%). Twenty-one (8%) of these patients required surgery. 4 people dislocated their shoulders.

101 patients suffered head injuries (135 cases). Soft tissue damage (27%). Fractures (19%); and tooth damage (17%). One patient had a cerebral hemorrhage. Thirty-two (13%) also suffered mild traumatic brain injury, 22 of whom were hospitalized.

In total, 1 in 4 patients (61; 25%) were hospitalized, 57 (23%) required surgery, and the average length of stay was 3 days, ranging from 1 to 12 days. did.

Of the 120 patients who filled out the questionnaire, two-thirds (82; 68%) had a driver’s license and about half (58; 48%) had previously driven an electric scooter. ..

One in five patients (49; 20%) tested positive for alcohol breath testing. Of these, 15 had persistent traumatic brain injury (31%).

A positive breath test increased the chance of traumatic brain injury by a factor of 5, and doubled the chance of hospitalization, even if the driver was accustomed to handling an electric scooter.

Previous experience with electronic scooters was associated with a three-fold increase in the probability of traumatic brain injury. Only 1% of riders wore helmets.

Researchers admit that their research was limited to four central emergency departments in one city, of which only patients in two emergency departments answered the questionnaire.

Nonetheless, they point out that the study reports on the largest population of patients involved in electric scooter accidents in Europe.

Their findings have led researchers to demand stricter regulations on electric scooter users. “This should include strict adherence to traffic regulations such as wearing a helmet, age limit of 18 years, banning alcohol, avoiding driving on the sidewalk,” they write.

“By making technical changes to the electronic scooter platform, providers can help eliminate additional sources. I added.

ER visits for almost twice as many e-scooter injuries in a year
