Could the Colorado Rockies and Milwaukee Brewers be Trevor Story trade partners? An article in The Athletic pieced together a trade, so let’s take a look at it.
In this article (subscription required), writers from The Athletic covering both the Brewers and Rockies discussed what a trade that would send Trevor Story to Milwaukee might take. Considering that Story’s contract expires at the end of the season, it’s a possibility that whatever team would acquire the All-Star shortstop in a trade might not be able to keep him past the end of this season.
So what would a Trevor Story trade between the Colorado Rockies and Milwaukee Brewers look like?
In The Athletic article, Story is sent to Milwaukee in exchange for left-handed starting pitcher Ethan Small, ranked as Milwaukee’s fourth overall prospect in The Athletic‘s Brewers prospects ranking (subscription required) as well as Triple-A outfielder Corey Ray and High-A middle infielder David Hamilton.
Small, who has his changeup and ability to pound the strike zone praised by The Athletic, made eight starts for Double-A Biloxi before being promoted to Triple-A Nashville on June 22. In his one start for Nashville, Small gave up two runs and three hits in 2.2 innings.
Ray is currently on the injured list, but has played in one game this season for the Brewers. The 26-year-old was the fifth overall pick for the Brewers in the 2016 draft and is spending his second season in Triple-A. Colorado already has plenty of young outfielders competing for playing time but Ray would add another left-handed bat to the mix.
Hamilton is using his speed for High-A Wisconsin, racking up 26 stolen bases so far this season. Of his 40 hits so far this season, 17 have gone for extra bases. He has seen time at both shortstop and second base.
Knowing that Story is very likely in his final days in Colorado, the Rockies should explore trades that present the franchise with prospects who are near ready to contribute at the Major League level. This trade seems to do that, and lands them a high-ranked pitching prospect as part of that.
While Rockies fans are not thrilled with the thought of Story playing for another team, a trade that nets promising prospects is a much better alternative than letting Story walk at the end of the season or putting a qualifying offer on him in order to earn a draft pick.
We’re fans of the proposed trade from The Athletic. What about our friends from Reviewing The Brew, a site that covers the Brewers. They’ll offer us their opinion shortly and we will link to it here.
