Rays activate Ji-Man Choi, trade Hunter Strickland to Angels - Tampa Bay Times

ST. PETERSBURG — The Rays activated first baseman Ji-Man Choi from the injured list shortly before Saturday’s game against the Mets and traded reliever Hunter Strickland to the Angels.

Choi had been sidelined since spring training after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. He returned Tuesday from a rehab assignment with Triple-A Durham reporting some soreness but with treatment had been feeling “significantly better” going through pregame workouts.

Strickland had pitched relatively well since being called up April 9, working in 13 games with a 1.69 ERA. But he was out of options and couldn’t be sent to the minors.

That limited the Rays’ flexibility in roster management, which was a factor as they wanted to go back from 14 pitchers to 13 and needed a spot for Choi. Plus, they expect to soon activate pitcher Michael Wacha and have other relievers rehabbing. Reliever Louis Head, who was sent down earlier this week, offers more flexibility.

The return for Strickland is not expected to be much, either a player to be named or cash. Angels manager Joe Maddon said they were happy to get someone doing as well as Strickland.

“It is unusual, but he’s coming from the Rays where they just keep creating them like counterfeit bills,” he said. “They have all that pitching down there. That’s why he’s available.”

Archer starting over; Patino may start

Chris Archer rejoined the team after an extended absence dealing with the May 1 death of his mother and will be in “full buildup mode” for the next several weeks, akin to the start of spring training.

Archer was originally sidelined by forearm tightness in an April 10 start and not eligible for reinstatement from the 60-day injured list until June 10.

“When he was at home, there was a period that he was able to throw and get some work in, then there was a down period where it just wasn’t as available so he kind of shut down,” manager Kevin Cash said. “I think we’re basically in a full buildup mode.

“We’ll decide as he gets ramped up what role, just all the different scenarios that could take place. But it is encouraging that he got back to playing catch again, seemed to be in good spirits. … It’s nice to have him back.”

Also:

• Right-hander Luis Patino is in line to progress to a traditional starting assignment, potentially as soon as Tuesday in Baltimore. Patino, the 21-year-old acquired from the Padres in the Blake Snell trade, has pitched twice as an extended opener and twice in relief, posting a 1-1, 1.54 record.

• Chaz Roe (shoulder) and Oliver Drake (flexor strain) took the next step in their rehabs Saturday by throwing off the bullpen mound but are “still a ways away,” Cash said. Both are on the 60-day injured list until June.

About Friday night

Brett Phillips reprised his airplane run through the outfield after delivering the game-winning walkoff hit in the ninth inning Friday, but he learned from his experience after his World Series Game 4 heroics, using a much shorter runway. In an obviously more emotional moment, he hyperventilated after the Series game, received an IV and needed to rest with his eyes covered.

“I learned my lesson with exhausting too much energy after being so excited,” Phillips said. “So I just gave it a little airplane (run) and then I looked back and I saw Kevin (Kiermaier) right behind me and he said, ‘Not this time,’ because he couldn’t catch me last time. So that was a little laugh. But it feels really good.”

Friday’s ninth-inning single was Phillips’ first career walkoff hit; his World Series winner against the Dodgers was a game-tying hit and an error. Also, it was only Phillips’ second career RBI off a lefty pitcher, having delivered a single off Xavier Cedeno, then with the White Sox, in an Aug. 1, 2018 game.

Miscellany

• After getting his first career hit Friday in his 13th plate appearance, infielder Kevin Padlo got the ball, some aggressive congrats in the dugout and “a little extra something in the shower” — the somewhat usual mix of cold beer, assorted beverages and condiments.

• Infielder Jake Hager, the No. 32 overall pick as a member of the Rays’ touted-but-disappointing 2011 draft class, was called up by the Mets to make his big-league debut at age 28.

Here is the Rays lineup:
