The New York Giants hold the 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, but they might not be taking the 11th player off the board. In 2017, the Kansas City Chiefs traded all the way up from the 27th pick to the 10th to select Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Obviously, it turned out to be a brilliant move for the Chiefs, as Mahomes is already an MVP and Super Bowl champion just four seasons into his career. Kansas City’s partner in that trade was the Buffalo Bills, who in return for dropping 17 spots received an extra third-round pick and a first-round pick the following year. For as great as that swap was for the Chiefs, it wasn’t too shabby for the Bills, either. Buffalo converted that extra draft capital into cornerback Tre’Davious White, offensive lineman Dion Dawkins, and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, all of whom are key starters.

New York could find themselves in Buffalo’s shoes in the upcoming 2021 draft. With five quarterbacks deemed worthy of a high first-round pick, and no need for a quarterback themselves, they could be in prime position to trade down and accumulate some extra assets. Let’s go through a few possible trade-down scenarios to determine approximately what the Giants might get back, and which prospects they could select in their new draft slot. As a note, the Washington Football Team is a candidate to move up for a quarterback. They’re not included as a potential trade partner here as the Giants would likely avoid dealing in their own division.
Option 1: Trade back with the New Orleans Saints
This option would mimic the afore-mentioned Bills-Chiefs trade almost to a tee. With the Saints sitting at 28th overall, the Giants would move down the same 17 spots the Bills did in 2017. As such, Big Blue could expect a similar bounty of picks in return, meaning an extra third-rounder this year and a first-rounder next year. Drew Brees‘ retirement this offseason could put New Orleans in the market for a new franchise quarterback, depending on how much faith they have in Jameis Winston. If Trey Lance or Mac Jones falls to 11, the Saints could feel emboldened to go and get their guy.
The Giants should still have plenty of options to address their needs with a quality prospect at 28th overall. Alabama guard Landon Dickerson would be a plug-and-play starter and immediately upgrade the interior of New York’s offensive line. Tulsa linebacker Zaven Collins is the type of versatile, athletic defender that would fit perfectly next to Blake Martinez. Even Miami EDGE Gregory Rousseau, who was being mocked to New York at 11 a few weeks ago, could fall to 28 due to a poor Pro Day.
Option 2: Trade back with the Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers currently hold the 24th pick, which according to Jimmy Johnson’s trade-value chart is worth 740 points. New York’s 11th overall selection is worth 1250 points, meaning Pittsburgh would have to offset 510 points in the swap. Conveniently, the Steelers’ second and third-round picks add up to 505 points, so New York could reasonably demand that return. The Steelers should be motivated to find a young, talented quarterback, as Ben Roethlisberger is on the brink of retirement.
The prospects mentioned above for 28th overall would be in play at 24, too. Minnesota receiver Rashod Bateman could be seriously considered, as his route-running at the intermediate level would complement Kenny Golladay nicely. Georgia’s Azeez Ojulari, Miami’s Jaelan Phillips, and Michigan’s Kwity Paye comprise a cluster of EDGE prospects projected as mid-first-round picks. There’s a decent chance one of them in still available at 24.
Option 3: Trade back with the Chicago Bears
Chicago sits at 20th overall, so moving back could net Big Blue second and fifth-round picks for their troubles. The Bears remain in eternal search for a quarterback, as Mitchell Trubisky flamed out and Andy Dalton is a stopgap.
Those three EDGE prospects would be strong possibilities at 20, too. A linebacker such as Notre Dame’s Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah or even Penn State’s Micah Parsons could be an intriguing option. This is also the range where offensive linemen like Virginia Tech’s Christian Darrisaw or USC’s Alijah Vera-Tucker could be available.
Option 4: Trade back with the New England Patriots
The Patriots only sit four spots back of the Giants at 15th. As such, New York could probably just get back New England’s third, fourth, and maybe sixth round picks. The Patriots need a new quarterback after Tom Brady‘s departure and Cam Newton‘s shaky season last year.
The benefit of moving back to 15 is the Giants could still nab a prospect they were eyeing at 11. It’s not crazy to think someone like Alabama receiver Devonta Smith or Northwestern offensive lineman Rashawn Slater could fall. This would be the perfect scenario to grab Vera-Tucker, though. He’s an ideal fit for the Giants but isn’t quite worth the 11th overall pick.
