Warriors are team to watch at 2021 NBA trade deadline, GM believes - NBC Sports Bay Area

Warriors president and general manager Bob Myers faces a few tough decisions over the next three weeks.

With the March 25 NBA trade deadline approaching, Myers and the Warriors' front office must decide whether to stand pat or cash in their chips for an established All-Star player to make a deep run in the playoffs.

And the Warriors have one of the most coveted assets in Minnesota's top-3 protected pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.

In a loaded draft class, if that pick falls to No. 4 or No. 5, a franchise-altering player, like Jonathan Kuminga, Jalen Suggs or Jalen Green, could be available.

Of course, if that pick lands in the top three this season, it converts to an unprotected 2022 first-round selection. With the Timberwolves at the bottom of the NBA standings this season, it's expected that they will remain there next year, meaning that 2022 pick could net one of the top players that year.

So what will the Warriors do? Will they trade it before the deadline, wait until the offseason to move it or hang on to it and use it either this year or next year?

No one, possibly other than Myers and his staff, know. But the rest of the NBA is keeping a close watch on what the Warriors are doing.

“Golden State is the team to watch right now,” one anonymous NBA general manager told True Hoops' Tom Haberstroh (H/T Hoops Rumors). “No one knows what they’re going to do with that pick.”

The player Warriors fans are clamoring for is Washington Wizards All-Star guard Bradley Beal, who leads the NBA in scoring at 32.9 points per game.

In January, NBC Sports Bay Area's Josh Schrock constructed four potential trade offers the Warriors could make to the Wizards for Beal, and all four proposals involved sending the Timberwolves' 2021 pick to Washington.

In all of those proposed trade ideas, the Warriors also would have to trade 2020 No. 2 overall draft pick James Wiseman, along with either Kelly Oubre Jr., Andrew Wiggins or less likely, Klay Thompson, and more future draft assets.

In the middle of the current season, if the Warriors hope to make the playoffs, it seems unlikely that the Warriors would remove so many current players to trade for Beal. For as good as Beal is, coach Steve Kerr would have to rework his offense.

Haberstroh believes that the more likely option is that the Warriors will wait until after the season to possibly move the Timberwolves' draft pick. At that point, they can wait for the ping pong balls to stop bouncing and see where the pick lands in the 2021 NBA Draft Lottery.

Whatever Myers and Co. decide to do, the Warriors will be the talk of the NBA for the next three weeks. If they stand pat before the trade deadline, they once again will be the team to keep an eye on in the offseason.

With Steph Curry turning 33 years old later this month, the Warriors need to maximize his prime. That might very well mean trading the Timberwolves' pick and possibly Wiseman in order to acquire an established star like Beal.
