NBA: Wizards willing to trade Bertans to some teams, per report - Bullets Forever

The NBA trade deadline is coming up on Mar. 25. There is certainly chatter among all the teams, including the Washington Wizards. However, with the team unwilling to part with franchise cornerstone Bradley Beal, there really isn’t much to talk about. The players you see in Wizards uniforms right now will probably still be in them after the deadline.

Though the Wizards are probably not making a major move, they are a bit more active behind the scenes. According to reporter Quinton Mayo, the Wizards are trying to do something, anything. Here’s a snippet from his piece:

Sources tell me that Wizards GM Tommy Sheppard has been “the most active” they’ve ever seen working the phone to acquire impact players. However, most negotiations have come to a standstill and it’s “likely” the team doesn’t make any trades ahead of the March 25 deadline.

It’s not a surprise to me that Sheppard is trying to bring in someone significant. But the reality is that trading away Troy Brown Jr., who is on the trade block, or Moritz Wagner, who didn’t receive the fourth-year option of his rookie contract isn’t going to bring in a player who can help Washington make a run for the Round-of-16 in the NBA Playoffs.

Mayo did reveal that the Wizards have changed. Davis Bertans is now on the trade block for some teams, based on his sources.

Bertans may have been an attractive option for some contenders last summer, but he is not performing up to par after signing a five-year, $80 million contract last November. He is also out for at least two weeks with a calf strain, so any team that trades for him would have to be patient in the short run and hope things work out in the years ahead once he returns.

I think it’s fair for the Wizards to put Bertans on the trade block. But like Mayo indicated, any efforts to make a significant trade will likely be futile.
