It’s NBA Trade Deadline week! With the deadline approaching on Thursday, March 25 at 3 p.m. ET, we’ll be tracking all the latest news and rumors. There’s already been plenty of chatter surrounding big names and players on expiring contracts. Some teams that we expect to be busy on deadline day include the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and Boston Celtics. Some teams that should be looking to sell are the Detroit Pistons, Minnesota Timberwolves and Oklahoma City Thunder. Below we’ll be providing updates and tracking the latest reports and rumors.
March 22 — Mavericks, Cavs talked Andre Drummond deal
The Mavericks had been linked to Drummond the last time he was on the trade block. This time around, Dallas is still trying to add Drummond, who could play center alongside Kristaps Porzingis at PF in the front court. This move doesn’t seem ideal and it still seems like Drummond will just get bought out rather than traded. The Mavs, along with Lakers and Nets, are expected to pursue Drumm in the buyout market, per Shams.
March 22 — Hawks expressed interest in Marcus Smart
Oh boy, I wish I was in Boston to see the overreactions to this rumor. Atlanta has dealt with a lot of injuries lately and De’Andre Hunter is close to returning to the lineup. It’d be pretty surprising if Smart was traded. He’s just coming back from a calf injury and is well regarded around the League as one of the top defenders. The Celtics lack assets and need front court depth but this wouldn’t be a .... Smart move (get it?). Again, Shams on the report for this.
March 22 — Magic-Rockets talk Aaron Gordon
According to Shams Charania, the Houston Rockets and Orlando Magic have had talks surrounding Gordon for two first-round picks. Gordon has dealt with injuries this season and has one year after this season left on his contract at a $16M hit. Talks between the Rockets and Magic haven’t really advanced much. The Timberwolves, Nuggets and Blazers have also expressed interest.
March 21 — Kyle Lowry, Norman Powell floating around in rumors
On Sunday, there were reports coming out that both Lowry and Powell are drawing interest on the open market. The Toronto Raptors are in the midst of a seven-game losing streak and are falling out of the playoff picture. The Raptors signed Fred VanVleet this offseason to a big deal. Pascal Siakam will be next. Lowry is on an expiring and the chances of him being retained in free agency seem slim. Toronto could look to move Lowry and/or Powell to retain some future assets and reload around a core of FVV, Siakam and Chris Boucher in a few seasons. The Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat and other teams are expected to be interested in Lowry.
March 21 — Victor Oladipo could be dealt in coming days
The Houston Rockets should be having a fire sale this week leading up to the deadline. Oladipo was acquired from the Indiana Pacers in the four-team James Harden trade. Dipo is another highly-regarded guard on an expiring contract (similar to Lowry). Dipo would make sense for a contending team looking to push themselves over the edge. We’ve heard the Clippers are looking to snag a guard with their lack of depth in the back court. You’d have to think teams like Philly, Miami and the Lakers could get involved.
March 21 — Andre Drummond, LaMarcus Aldridge likely to get bought out
Drummond and LMA are both sitting out for the Cleveland Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs, respectively. With both players sporting pretty high salaries despite being on expiring contracts, it’s more likely the Cavs and Spurs reach buyout agreements. The Lakers have already been linked to Drummond and we can expect the Brooklyn Nets to be involved — similar to when they picked up former All-Star Blake Griffin after he was bought out by the Pistons. Drummond and Aldridge could be solid pieces that will swing the standings in the playoff race in either conference.
