UPDATE: It took a day longer than expected due to COVID protocol but the trade for Jonas Johansson has been finalized. The Avalanche will send their 2021 6th round pick in Buffalo in exchange for the 25-year old goalie.
It is expected to be a few games before he is able to suit up for the Avalanche.
UPDATE: As the two teams were waiting for the trade call with the NHL, a wrench was thrown into the situation when the Boston Bruins returned a number of positive COVID tests. The Sabres played in Boston last night and are now in danger of infection themselves. The situation is still in flux but this could delay any deal for a few days - perhaps longer.
No announcement has been made but the Colorado Avalanche are in the process of trading for goaltender Jonas Johansson from the Buffalo Sabres.
The 25-year old has played seven NHL games this season and is currently sporting a .884 sv%. He is likely to take over from Hunter Miska as the team’s backup.
The Avalanche had been looking at a potential reunion with Jonathan Bernier but with the veteran netminder getting hurt Thursday night, it looks like Joe Sakic has moved on to Plan B.
Standing 6’5, Johansson is a very different netminder from Avalanche starter Philipp Grubauer. Johansson uses his size to take up space in the net and works to play the percentages and let the puck hit him as opposed to Grubauer’s more athletic stlye.
