We start the day with partly cloudy to mostly cloudy skies as the next storm system approaches. Hazy sunshine will be the main item on the Sunday forecast list with temperatures warming well above freezing. This is thanks to the nice southerly wind out ahead of the low. Temperatures will go from the teens this morning to the mid-40s this afternoon.
After 11 consecutive days of sub-freezing temperatures and three winter storms, we can finally start the thawing process. Yesterday’s sunshine certainly helped start the process. The next few days will remove most of what’s on the ground still. Today will feature hazy sunshine, meaning cirrostratus clouds overhead. Temperatures will warm, mainly from the southerly wind ramping up a bit out ahead of the low moving in. We should touch the mid-40s or even low 50s for highs this afternoon, ramping up the melting process. Tonight, rain showers arrive shortly after midnight wrapping up around the mid-morning hours for I-75 and continuing until about noon for the eastern counties. Precipitation remains only rain due to lows only dropping into the middle 30s overnight. Rain will also help wash away snow and ice. Only expect 0.25” to 0.50” inches of rainfall. Further melting will occur through the middle of the week as we dry out but continue to warm up. Temperatures jump to 50+ degrees Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.
A reminder for the melting that will be occurring. Keep away from icicles suspended from gutters and other surfaces. As the melting occurs, they will become heave and fall. This is extremely dangerous and can cause serious injury if standing under falling ice. Also, take a little time and brush off the snow and ice on top of your vehicle if you have some. As it thaws and you reach higher speeds, the snow and ice will fly off and possibly damage other vehicles behind you, or worse, cause an accident. It takes a few minutes and could save someone’s life.
