It’s been a winter of change on the North Side and the Cubs may not be finished.
Contreras has popped up in trade rumors in recent weeks, with separate reports linking him to the Angels and Marlins. (Reports out of Anaheim suggest the Angels' Kurt Suzuki signing takes them out of Contreras sweepstakes.) Cubs president Jed Hoyer last month called another report stating the club is “excessively shopping” their 28-year-old backstop “fictional.”
However, that doesn’t mean something can’t materialize this offseason, but rather suggests nothing was imminent at the time. Contreras is the Cubs’ most valuable trade chip among position players, and as they retool their roster this winter with an eye on their future (see: Darvish and Caratini trade), he could land Hoyer and Co. promising prospects.
Of course, the Cubs could just hold onto Contreras, a key figure in their lineup and clubhouse. But as the rumors swirl around his name, here are five factors that could impact his trade market.
