The Rockets on Wednesday acquired the draft rights to Kenyon Martin Jr., using the Lakers’ 2021 second round pick they had acquired from the Pistons earlier in the night and cash.
Martin, the son of the former Nets and Nuggets star, is a 6-7 small forward who played at IMG Academy who had been drafted by the Sacramento Kings.
Martin had committed to Vanderbilt out of Sierra Canyon (Calif.) before opting for another year of prep school, averaging 19.6 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.1 blocks in 30 minutes per game for the IMG post-graduate team.
He is considered to be extremely athletic and an especially strong rebounder who will need to develop his offensive game and on the perimeter defensively.
His father was a veteran of 15 NBA seasons, an All-Star with the Nets.
The trade, with the Rockets sending $1 million to the Kings, was the first between former Rockets assistants, Rafael Stone and Monte McNair, both running their first draft as general managers.
