Arizona Diamondbacks trade partners big winners at 2020 MLB trade deadline - The Arizona Republic

gamagana.blogspot.com

Several stories listing the winners and the losers of the 2020 MLB trade deadline have been published since the deadline passed on Monday.

Something popped out about them: The frequency of which the Diamondbacks' 2020 trade deadline partners showed up in the "winners" category in them.

In MLB.com's list, all four Diamondbacks trade partners on Monday, the Miami Marlins, Chicago Cubs, Toronto Blue Jays and Cincinnati Reds, are listed among the seven teams that won the MLB trade deadline in 2020.

Arizona traded outfielder Starling Marte to the Marlins. It sent reliever Andrew Chafin to the Cubs. It moved starter Robbie Ray to the Blue Jays. It dealt closer Archie Bradley to the Reds.

MLB.com's Richard Justice listed the Marlins as the No. 2 winner at the deadline.

Of the Marte trade, he wrote: "He was the best position player to change teams on Monday and a nice reward for a remarkable, overachieving Marlins club that has been great fun to watch. Marte entered Monday with an .827 OPS, higher than any current Marlin, and his presence in the middle of the order will make life easier for the players around him in the order. They also traded away infielder Jonathan Villar in a deal with the Blue Jays, and it will be interesting to see how they fill that void."

The Reds were ranked as the No. 3 winner.

Justice wrote of Cincinnati acquiring Bradley: "The Reds may have been hoping to do more, but he represents more than incremental improvement. Bradley is only 28 and entered Monday averaging 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings. He will upgrade a bullpen that has had a tough season."

The Blue Jays were listed as the No. 5 winner.

Of Ray, Justice wrote: "If the Blue Jays can somehow get Ray on track, they’ll be thrilled about their day."

The Cubs came in at No. 7 on the list of MLB trade deadline winners.

Justice wrote of their moves, which included acquiring Chafin: "The Cubs got better, and isn’t that the bottom line? Not every team can say that. They did not pull off the bombshell trade for a starting pitcher Cubs fans may have been hoping for, but they got four pieces that could push them over the top in the NL Central. Maybin, who joined the fly-ball revolution last season, is an especially interesting acquisition, as are the two lefty relievers who give manager David Ross more options to maneuver through the end of games."

Several other sites listed Diamondbacks trade partners as winners at the deadline.

The Sporting News' Ryan Fagan wrote of the Jays' starting pitcher additions, which included Ray: "The Blue Jays have been a fun story this year, and they’ve added a pair of high-upside pitchers to their rotation. Not that anyone asked me, but I love these two short-term acquisitions. Both could make a big impact on their playoff push. Both are free agents after the season, but neither cost much."

He also raved about the Marte deal for Miami: "The Marlins haven’t made the postseason since 2003, and they haven’t gotten much production from their outfield. Enter Starling Marte. It wasn’t surprising that the Diamondbacks were willing to move him, but it was a bit surprising that the Marlins were the team to offer the best deal. That deal was reported within minutes of the Jonathan Villar deal — traded to the Blue Jays — and that seemed confusing, until we learned that Isan Diaz was coming back, after initially opting out because of COVID-19 concerns. That’s like a bonus trade-deadline addition. "

Of the Bradley to Cincinnati addition, he wrote: "Love the addition of Archie Bradley to a bullpen that needs help."

Fagan wasn't quite as high on the Cubs' moves as others, however.

Of Chicago picking up Chafin, he wrote: "The Cubs have had a fine year, but they didn’t exactly go all-out at the trade deadline, instead opting to deal for guys with track records that are better than 2020 production. And, sure, what we’ve seen in 2020 is a small sample size, but this whole season is a small sample size. Their three pick-ups: Andrew Chafin, the lefty reliever with an 8.10 ERA and 1.950 WHIP in 2020; Jose Martinez, the DH with a .239 average and 99 OPS+; and Cameron Maybin, the outfielder with a 94 OPS+. If they produce like years past, good moves. If not, meh. It’s not like they gave up much."

CBS Sports was also high on the Blue Jays and Reds' acquisitions from the Diamondbacks.

USA TODAY Sports included the Blue Jays and Cubs among its winners.

If all of its trade partners are winning the trade deadline, what does that make the Diamondbacks?

Yahoo Sports listed the Diamondbacks among its big losers at the 2020 MLB trade deadline.

Mike Oz wrote: "This year hasn’t gone as planned for most of us. It really hasn’t gone how Arizona envisioned it after trading for Starling Marte and signing Madison Bumgarner during the offseason. The D-backs have postseason hopes, but are clearly bailing on their plan after trading Marte to the Miami Marlins. Also gone are struggling starting pitcher Robbie Ray and closer Archie Bradley. It’s a stark reminder that going all-in has its consequences when it goes all wrong. Especially for teams not known for going all-in."

ESPN also had the Diamondbacks among its losers at the deadline.

Bradford Doolittle wrote: "Without knowing the identity of the player to be named later that Arizona will get as the third part of the return from Miami for Starling Marte, it’s hard to really grade the Diamondbacks’ deadline. Still, they join the loser class simply because of the trajectory of their season. They went from a popular sleeper pick to go deep into October before the season to a so-so 13-11 start — which gets you into the 2020 playoffs — to a 14-20 mark on deadline day. Thus, Arizona heads into the final month with Madison Bumgarner on the injured list and having traded Marte, Robbie Ray and Archie Bradley for a group of players whom their fans are going to have a hard time being excited about, to put it kindly. It’s not that they were unnecessary or bad deals; time will tell on that. It has just been a very disappointing season in Phoenix."

Fangraphs also listed the Diamondbacks as a loser.

Craig Edwards wrote: Even after the team traded Paul Goldschmidt ahead of the 2019 season, Arizona was still able to compete. It’s not entirely clear what their plans are for next year, but moving Marte, who has a reasonable option, and Archie Bradley isn’t a great sign that the D-backs plan to get better next season. They still have a lot of talented players, but even with Madison Bumgarner’s salary going up next season, the team has only around $50 million in salary commitments in 2021, about half what they were looking at after last winter. Perhaps the D-backs are going to use that financial flexibility this offseason, or look to their farm system for reinforcements (they check in at ninth in our rankings right now), but their trades seemed more of the cost-cutting variety, and with the Dodgers still the Dodgers and the Padres on the rise, a contending season for Arizona is going to be difficult without more talent.
