Giants trade speedster Billy Hamilton to Mets for pitching prospect - San Francisco Chronicle

Billy Hamilton’s time with the Giants passed in a blur, his trademark on the field as well. First we saw him. Now we don’t.

The Giants traded Hamilton to the Mets on Sunday for minor-league right-hander Jordan Humphreys, 24, a top-30 New York prospect who missed all of 2018 and part of 2019 after two surgeries, including Tommy John. The Giants then optioned Humphreys to their alternate camp in Sacramento.

Hamilton, 29, always was going to be a luxury for the Giants, a speed and defense specialist who could fill a niche on an expanded roster. But he missed almost all of summer training with a medical condition that the team would not disclose, and rosters are set to shrink by two Thursday.

“Our roster evolved and we recognized the value of having extra bats and extra arms in the pen,” manager Gabe Kapler said. “That just made Hamilton a tougher fit, especially with us going down to a 28-man roster later this week.”

The Mets’ desire for Hamilton was not tied to Yoenis Cespedes’ unexplained disappearance from the Mets in Atlanta on Sunday. The clubs had talked Saturday.

More likely, the Mets needed more speed and depth in center after Jake Marisnick went on the injured list with a hamstring injury.

The Mets dealt Humphreys to the Giants after designated him for assignment to clear a 40-man spot in an earlier transaction. In 2017, before he got hurt, he had a 1.42 ERA with 80 strikeouts in 69 ⅔ innings for the Mets’ Class A South Atlantic League team, making 11 starts.

His return was delayed when he required another procedure to repair an elbow nerve. He pitched twice in rookie league last summer, then threw 11 ⅔ innings and allowed one run over four games in the Arizona Fall League. The Giants are not sure whether they will build him up to start or convert him to relief.

Despite the missed time, Baseball America rated Humphreys the Mets’ 11th-best prospect during spring training. MLB.com did not have him in its top 30.

“If you look Humphreys’ track record, he had some pretty dominating performances as as starter in the lower levels,” Giants general manager Scott Harris said. “His fastball has unique characteristics that play up in the zone.”
