There is a lot going on with the moon this year. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the lunar events.
First off, we get an extra full moon this year, but we have to wait until Halloween. Usually each month has a full moon since a full moon occurs every 28 days. With the lunar cycle being shorter than our monthly calendar, there are more full moons than months.
A second full moon in a month is also called a blue moon. The Halloween full moon will be a blue moon. The moon doesn’t appear blue. It’s just the name it has been given.
Three of the full moons will be supermoons this year, or sort of superish. Todd Slisher, Executive Director of Longway Planetarium, says the term supermoon is being used quite loosely now. He advises that most supermoons are only around five percent larger in appearance than a regular full moon.
This image from NASA shows the difference in size between a full moon and a supermoon.
Supermoons will occur on February 9, March 9 and April 7. Slisher jokes that April will be the “most super” of the supermoons. April’s full moon will be the closest to Earth of the three supermoons in 2020.
There will also be a micro-moon this year. A micro-moon is not an officially accepted astronomy term, but it implies the opposite of a supermoon. A micro-moon is the smallest full moon, when the full moon occurs when the moon is at its farthest distance from Earth. The micro-moon is also at Halloween.
So the full moon at Halloween is a mouthful. It’s a bluemoon micro-moon.
