US President Donald Trump has addressed thousands of Americans on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC, following a prelude of flag burning and clashes between extremists from the far right and left.
Trump told crowds marking Independence Day that the "future of American Freedom" depended on the men and women who were willing to defend it, during his controversial "Salute to America" address.

The Pentagon has been ordered by the president to stage military demonstrations, including a flyover of jets, helicopters and other aircraft, in what Trump has promised will be the "show of a lifetime".
Critics have decried the exercise as a waste of taxpayer dollars and a needless glorification of Trump.

Meanwhile, an anti-war organisation has put up a six-metre-tall diaper-clad balloon of an infant Donald Trump in the shadow of the Washington Monument to protest what it calls the president's co-opting of Independence Day.
Clashes between pro and anti-Trump protesters earlier forced the Secret Service to start clearing the National Mall in the nation's capital.
A torrential summer downpour doused whatever the armed forces weren't able to extinguish, as thousands waited for Trump to appear.
