GettyWow.
The unthinkable happened on Saturday in New York at Madison Square Garden. Andy Ruiz Jr. shocked the world and scored an upset seventh-round TKO win over Anthony Joshua to become the WBO, IBF and WBA Heavyweight champion. Ruiz came in as +1125 underdog to score one of the biggest upsets in heavyweight championship boxing history. The win made Ruiz the first Mexican heavyweight champion of the world.
Here is a look at the highlights of the upset victory.

From the outset, Ruiz gave Joshua problems with his hand speed. Whenever the fight went to close quarters, Ruiz seemed to get the better of the exchanges. So much so, Joshua was the man backing up throughout. The two men may have split the first two rounds, but in the third, things were turned upside down.

GettyJoshua rocked Ruiz and dropped him with a picture-perfect left hook. Things looked bleak for the challenger. Joshua went in for the kill, but he got careless, and the sturdy Ruiz was waiting. He clipped Joshua with his own left hook on the ear. Immediately, Joshua's legs were wobbly. Ruiz took advantage and scored his own knockdown. Moments later, Ruiz would drop Joshua again.
Joshua barely made it out of the round and may have gotten a break from the referee when he didn't answer the call to walk forward. In the fourth, fifth, and sixth rounds, Joshua tried to regain his composure, but he struggled to find his legs. He also looked to be exhausted and completely out of sorts. His body language in the sixth was especially troubling as Ruiz started to land hard body shots.
In the seventh, Ruiz completed his masterpiece by dropping Joshua two more times. Again, he launched his assault after Joshua seemingly hurt him with his own power shot. After the last knockdown, Joshua couldn't answer the referee's commands to his satisfaction, and the Brit had already spit his mouthpiece out. He looked like a beaten fighter, and the fight was stopped. There could have been some controversy, but in the end, the right call was made. Joshua was done.

GettyRuiz is now one of the most improbable champions the sport has ever seen. Many critics poked fun at his stature and didn't give him much of a chance to win. I had a feeling, but admittedly, I didn't have the heart to pick him to pull the upset.
I've strongly considered it, but can't pull the trigger

There is an immediate rematch clause, and Joshua said he expected to exercise it before the end of the year, and that the second fight would take place in the United Kingdom. Fans had been anticipating a mega fight between Joshua and WBC Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder, but the two never came to an agreement. Instead, Wilder has agreed to face Luis Ortiz in September and rematch Tyson Fury in the early part of 2020.
If Joshua cannot defeat Ruiz, we may never see that fight. If Wilder can make it past his two significant tests, a title unification bout with Ruiz might become the biggest fight in the division. What a sport.
