The Reds were 3-0 down in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final with Barcelona when they won a free-kick deep into the fifth minute of stoppage time at the end of the game through Mohamed Salah.
Cameras showed Jurgen Klopp whistling and pointing for his keeper Alisson to join his team-mates in the Barca box in hope of giving them a numerical advantage as Liverpool sought an away goal to take back to Anfield.
But though BT’s cameras did not show Alisson, focusing instead on corner taker Salah, Liverpool legend McManaman pointed out how the Brazilian shot-stopper refused his manager’s commands.
Alisson then reluctantly began to make his way towards the Barca half before Salah noticed him and refused to take the corner until he backed off, wary that a fourth Barca goal would definitively kill the tie.
Co-commentator McManaman said: “Jurgen’s pointing at Alisson to get in the box as well, and Alisson just said no to him!
“Now he’s going. He’s been told no again. Salah said no to him this time.”
Freelance journalist James Nalton, who was in the Nou Camp press box, meanwhile tweeted: “Alisson nearly went up for that corner at the end. Reached half way then changed his mind.”
Liverpool were left breathing a sigh of relief that Alisson didn’t go up, as Barca countered immediately after Salah’s delivery was dealt with and should have made it 4-0.
Substitute Ousmane Dembele raced into the Liverpool half with Gerard Pique driving down the middle and Lionel Messi in space on the left with Andy Robertson the only visiting player back and Jordan Henderson sprinting to help him out.
Dembele looked to Messi on the edge of the box with the Argentine drawing the attention of Henderson, Robertson and the retreating Sadio Mane before returning the ball to Dembele only for the winger to scuff his shot straight at Alisson.
The score-line leaves Liverpool with it all to do after Messi scored a second-half brace to put Barca on the cusp of a berth in the final in Madrid on June 1.
Luis Suarez scored - and celebrated - against his former club with a fine first-half goal, poking over Alisson from Jordi Alba’s sublime low cross into the box.
Liverpool played well and were still just one goal down with 20 minutes to go, having had chances of their own only to see Mane and James Milner waste their opportunities.
Messi then profited from a fortunate rebound off the crossbar after Suarez hit the woodwork to make it 2-0 on 75 minutes.
But there was no luck at all about his third goal, as the Barca captain curled a stunning free-kick around the Liverpool wall and into the top corner from 30 yards out for his 600th goal for the club.
Liverpool must now win 3-0 in the return tie at Anfield next Tuesday to take the tie to extra time, while a 4-0 win would take them through without the need for another half-an-hour.
If they concede once, however, Liverpool must win by four clear goals to progress meaning they require a 5-1 score-line if Barca find the back of the net on Merseyside.
