Indonesia: More than 270 election staff die from fatigue | Malawi 24 - Malawi news - Malawi24

Over 270 elections staff have died in Indonesia following single-day polls involving  150 million voters.

According to the General Elections Commission (KPU), most of the workers succumbed to fatigue-related illnesses after long hours of counting millions of ballot papers by hand.

The polls which were held on April 17 included presidential, national and regional parliamentary elections as the KPU wanted to cut costs.

During the polls, each voter had had to punch up to five ballot papers in more than 800,000 polling stations.

Meanwhile, Indonesians have criticized the KPU for failing to manage workers’ workload.

Winners of the presidential and parliamentary elections are expected to be announced on May 22.

That will be a day after Malawi’s tripartite elections in which 6.8 million people registered to vote.
