Historic day for new indigenous minister - 9news.com.au

Ken Wyatt says his appointment as indigenous Australians minister is a chance to ensure "the greatness of our many nations" is reflected in wider Australia.

The West Australian MP was the first indigenous man to become a federal government minister when he took on aged care in January 2017.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced his historic new role in Canberra on Sunday.

"Incredibly honoured to be the first Aboriginal Minister for Indigenous Australians," Mr Wyatt tweeted on Sunday.

"Committed to working & walking together with our Elders, families & communities to ensure the greatness of our many nations is reflected in the greatness of our Australian nation, now and forever."

Mr Morrison said Mr Wyatt will be supported by a new National Indigenous Australians Agency, attached to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Bill Shorten was planning to appoint indigenous senator Patrick Dodson to the indigenous affairs role if Labor won the election, but the coalition claimed the milestone.
