Marvel superhero blockbuster Avengers: Endgame is crushing the competition by setting multiple records at the box office a day after its release.

Disney said the film opened on Friday with a record US domestic haul of US$156.7m (NZ$235m), including Thursday previews, besting Star Wars: The Force Awakens' US$119m (NZ$178m) in 2015, and Avengers: Infinity War's US$106m (NZ$159m) in 2018.

Outside the US, Endgame broke another record by grossing an estimated US$487m (NZ$731m) at the end of Friday, surpassing The Fate Of The Furious, aka Fast & Furious 8, which took US$443m (NZ$665m) in 2017.

The superhero film also broke the record for the highest opening weekend globally of all time with US$644m (NZ$967m) at the end of Friday. The previous record holder was Infinity War, with US$641m (NZ$962m).
