Harvest moon, blue moon will both occur in October - KFYR-TV

BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - In a month that is usually known for fall and Trick or Treating, this October, celestial events will be the focus as not just one, but two full moons will occur.

One might just call this a "once in a Blue Moon” event.

The first full moon will occur on the first day of the month and is known as the Harvest Moon. It is the full moon that occurs closes to the fall equinox and commonly falls in September, but this year it is happening in October, which is a rare occurrence. This full moon will peak at 4:06 p.m. CT on Thursday.

The celestial calendar is just about 29 days from one full moon to the next, but our calendars have some months that have 30 to 31 days. When both calendars line up just perfectly, it is possible for one month to have two full moons. This is known as a “Blue Moon” and is where the expression “Once in a Blue Moon” comes from. Meaning something is uncommon, but is not rare.  Blue Moon typically occur about every two and a half years.

So, our Blue Moon will not only be the Hunter’s Moon, but also the Halloween Moon as it occurs on Oct. 31, something that only happens every 18-19 years.

This spooky Full Moon with be at its fullest at 9:49 a.m. CT. The last Blue Moon to occur on Halloween was in 1944 and the next one being in 2039.

And if you are thinking the moon will be blue like the name suggests…think again. The moon will have more of a ghostly appearance.

The Proud Boys, Who Trade in Political Violence, Get a Boost From Trump - The New York Times

gamagana.blogspot.com

When hundreds of supporters of President Trump gathered for a Labor Day rally in Oregon, a man in the signature black-and-gold shirt of the Proud Boys approached the crowd with a welcoming smile.

If the Republican activists ever needed security for an event, said the man, Flip Todd, the Proud Boys were available. They had sworn loyalty to the country and the president, he said. “We’ll continue to fight for you.”

It took only a few hours to demonstrate what that might entail. As some in the rally caravanned by car to Salem, the state capital, the Proud Boys joined a group of right-wing demonstrators who rushed across a street and began attacking people who had set up a leftist counterprotest. At one point, a large man in a bulletproof vest knocked a much smaller counterprotester to the ground, an event the Proud Boys celebrated later when they posted video of the attack. “Hulk smash!” it said.

The far-right band of brothers who have turned street thuggery into political theater had not quite become a household name before President Trump was asked about the Proud Boys during Tuesday night’s presidential debate, and whether he would condemn white supremacists: “Proud Boys,” he said, “stand back and stand by.”

Within minutes of hearing the president’s remark, Enrique Tarrio, the Proud Boys’ chairman, called down to the T-shirt business he owns in Miami with an order to get the presses rolling. “PROUD BOYS STANDING BY,” the new shirts said.

To Gavin McInnes, the founder and former chairman of the Proud Boys, the president’s request was a call to action against antifa, the loose collective of antifascist activists who have mounted raucous street demonstrations against police violence, corporate dominance and inequality in cities across America this summer.

“I think he was saying that if antifa starts burning down cities again, go in and fight them,” Mr. McInnes said. “I think he was saying I appreciate you and appreciate your support.”

The Proud Boys describe themselves as “western chauvinists” who “refuse to apologize for creating the modern world.” By reputation, the Proud Boys are a far-right group of brawlers where punches are part of membership initiation. Its participants have espoused misogynistic, Islamophobic, anti-Semitic and anti-immigrant views while making allies with white supremacists whom group leaders claim to disavow.

Over the past four years, the group has engaged in clashes in cities like Portland, Ore., and Berkeley, Calif., as well as at the notorious neo-Nazi march in Charlottesville, Va., in 2017 that was organized by a Proud Boys member.

Mr. Trump sought to quell a backlash from fellow Republicans over his remarks on Wednesday, denying any knowledge of the Proud Boys. And some in the Proud Boys sought to create distance as well. “I don’t see it, and the organization doesn’t see it, as a direct endorsement,” said Mr. Tarrio, the current chairman, contradicting his predecessor. Mr. Trump’s remarks about “standing by” were “a small slip,” he said, intended to suggest that the group should “stand by and let the cops do their job.”

But the president’s remark, which came after Joseph R. Biden Jr., the Democratic candidate, mentioned the group, also attracted attention and approval among avowed white supremacists. “I got shivers. I still have shivers,” wrote Andrew Anglin, the founder of the Daily Stormer, a neo-Nazi website. “He is telling the people to stand by. As in: get ready for war.”

While the Proud Boys claim to be anti-establishment, they also court members of the Republican elite and count Roger Stone, the conservative political consultant and ally of Mr. Trump, among their most high-profile supporters. Mr. Stone recorded a voice mail message for Mr. Tarrio, who dropped out of the Republican primary for a congressional seat in Florida this year after failing to attract much interest or financial support.

The Proud Boys have been able to make inroads with mainstream conservatives in part because its members wrap themselves in libertarian values, said Samantha Kutner of the Khalifa Ihler Institute, an academic collective that maps far-right groups globally. “It is hard for people to understand the kind of extremism that comes wrapped in the American flag,” she said.

Mr. McInnes, a co-founder of Vice, the provocative hipster magazine, established the Proud Boys in 2016 in New York.

He initially conceived of the group as a Knights of Columbus-like drinking club where men could come together in a kind of right-wing safe space. But after Mr. Trump took office, he and the group began to serve as bodyguards for ultraconservative speakers like Ann Coulter and Milo Yiannopoulos whose events were protested and occasionally shut down by left-wing antifa activists.

“I love being white and I think it’s something to be very proud of,” he told The New York Times in a 2003 interview. “I don’t want our culture diluted. We need to close the borders now and let everyone assimilate to a Western, white, English-speaking way of life.”

One of the group’s most notorious acts was a motorcade in 2017 through Islamberg, a hamlet in upstate New York, where a number of Muslim families had moved to escape racism and violence in New York City; the Proud Boys falsely accused the Muslims there of training Islamist extremists. On another occasion, the group crashed a fund-raising event for the victims of sexual violence at a bar in the Canadian city of Vancouver.

After Kyle Rittenhouse, 17, was arrested in August in the shooting deaths of two protesters in Kenosha, Wis., “Rittenhouse Did Nothing Wrong” was the kind of T-shirt that popped up at Proud Boy rallies.

Much of what the group does “is intended to provoke and trigger people, get them upset to the point that they want to engage in some kind of physical altercation,” Ms. Kutner said. Their tactics and ideology have led to accusations that they are the modern face of fascism.

Last year, in sentencing two Proud Boys members to lengthy jail sentences after a brawl with leftists in Manhattan, Justice Mark Dwyer of the New York State Supreme Court said such acts were particularly dangerous “at this time in the country when people are so divided.”

“I know enough about history to know what happened in Europe in the ’30s when political street brawls were allowed to go ahead,” he said.

Social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter have at times cracked down on the Proud Boys. Members have migrated to other organizing tools, such as their own website and the instant messaging platform Telegram.

Less than 24 hours after Mr. Trump made his comments, two of the largest Proud Boy groups on Telegram added hundreds of new members.

Mr. McInnes has claimed the Proud Boys have 5,000 members, with chapters in almost every state as well as about a half-dozen countries. Experts put the number much lower, at anywhere between 1,000 and 3,000.

Violence is built into the group’s very DNA. There are four levels of membership, starting with saying the pro-Western creed aloud, then moving higher to a Proud Boys tattoo. The highest level was once reserved for those who engage in violence on the group’s behalf.

The group’s flag, featuring a rooster weather vane pointing west, sports the words “The West is the Best,” and its annual convention, held recently in Las Vegas, is called WestFest. The group’s name was reportedly inspired by a song, “Proud of Your Boy,” written for the Disney film “Aladdin.”

Mr. McInnes insisted on Wednesday that there was not “some sort of secret standing army” of Proud Boys and militia men awaiting orders from the president to engage in street fighting. But if violent protests continue around the country, he said, “ordinary Americans are finally going to say, ‘We’re sick of you burning down our cities,’ and they’re going to start fighting back.”

The sources of the group’s funding remain murky. At one point, members seemed to be paying $20 a month in dues, said Megan Squire, a professor at Elon University in North Carolina who tracks extremist groups online. There is considerable overlap in their membership with neo-Nazi groups, she said.

The Proud Boys have long used Portland as a venue for clashing with local left-wing activists, and supporters of the group have been visible there throughout the summer, sometimes engaging in violent confrontations.

In mid-August, one participant in a right-wing demonstration fired two gunshots, authorities said. The following week, a Proud Boys supporter brandished a gun, pointing it at left-wing opponents. The next week, when a pro-Trump caravan motored into Portland, a supporter of the far-right group Patriot Prayer was fatally shot by an antifa activist — a killing that became a rallying cry for the Proud Boys.

Last weekend, the Proud Boys assembled in Portland, billing the gathering as an event to “end domestic terrorism.” They predicted that several thousand people would attend, from all over the country.

In the end, there were less than 1,000 — some of them members of other right-wing groups.

State-Level Trade Data - usda.gov

gamagana.blogspot.com

State Exports

Although a State’s actual agricultural export value cannot be measured directly, USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) estimates State exports of total and selected commodities based on U.S. farm-cash-receipts data. State shares of U.S. farm receipts are updated annually in calculating State-level export values to foreign countries. ERS has discontinued updates of an alternative fiscal-year (October to September) series of State export estimates based on State and commodity shares of production, but continues to provide the historical estimates based on that methodology. The Documentation page describes both the current cash-receipts-based method and the discontinued production-based method.

The farm commodities and products for which State-level exports are estimated reflect the commodity coverage of published cash receipts calculated at the State and national levels. The commodity coverage for exports includes 24 categories, as well as aggregate estimates for animal products and plant products and total agricultural exports. Exports that do not have their own category are grouped into “Other livestock products” or “Other plant products.” The generally large export value of “Other plant products” is due to the number of processed agricultural products (such as confections and prepared foods) whose ingredients cannot easily be identified among the listed categories. This large group also includes sugar, essential oils, planting seeds, cocoa and coffee products, and beverages.

The files below provide the calendar-year (January to December) State export estimates using the new U.S. farm-receipts-based method starting in 2000, as well as the historical estimates using the former U.S. agricultural-production-based method for 1990-2010. All export values are calibrated so that the sum of State export estimates for a commodity category equals the total U.S. export value for that commodity.

State Trade by Country of Origin and Destination

There is not currently a cash-receipts-based method, as used for the State Exports estimates, that provides a similar estimate of foreign imports at the State level. To provide comparable information regarding both imports and exports for States, ERS relies on the Census Bureau’s State Data Series which includes the State of Origin of Movement (OM) Series and the State of Destination (SD) Series. As defined by the Census Bureau, the OM Series lists the “state from which the merchandise starts its journey to the port of export,” and the State of Destination (SD) Series, which is based on the U.S. State of Destination Code; defined as “the U.S. state, U.S. territory or U.S. possession where the merchandise is destined, as known at the time of entry summary filing.”

The State Data Series has known limitations but even in light of these limitations the series still provides the most reliable, comprehensive, and well-documented information for both exports and imports at the State level. One limitation of the State Data Series is the attribution of commodities to the State where they are consolidated for shipment, rather than to the State in which they are produced. As a result, larger export values and quantities are attributed to States such as Louisiana and New York where major export ports are located. Similarly, imports may be attributed to a State where merchandise is stored prior to distribution to other States for further processing and/or consumption. These distortions would be magnified if one were to calculate a trade balance using these data. Therefore, calculation of a trade balance using the State Trade Data product is discouraged.

A thorough comparison of the Census Bureau State Data Series and USDA Farm Production or Cash-Receipts Estimates can be found in the Documentation section for these products.

NBA Trade Rumors: Pelicans' Jrue Holiday could end up with the Pacers - NBA Analysis Network

gamagana.blogspot.com
Jrue Holiday, Pacers, Pelicans
NBA Analysis Network

The Indiana Pacers and New Orleans Pelicans are both expected to be aggressive this coming offseason. After both teams ended their respective season in disappointing fashion, they could look to hit the trade market heavily. Jrue Holiday is a name to keep a close eye on.

Holiday has been mentioned in trade rumors over the last couple of years. However, the Pelicans have not pulled the trigger. This offseason could be the year that New Orleans ends up moving their star guard.

Could the Pacers get involved in a trade with the Pelicans to acquire Holiday?

During the 2019-20 NBA season with the Pelicans, Holiday ended up averaging 19.1 points per game to go along with 6.7 assists, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.6 steals. He shot 45.5 percent from the floor overall and knocked down 35.3 percent of his three-point attempts.

All of that being said, let’s take a look at an intriguing trade that has been mentioned that would send Jrue Holiday from the Pelicans to the Pacers.

Azerbaijan, Armenia clash as France, Turkey trade barbs: Live - Al Jazeera English

gamagana.blogspot.com
  • Fighting between Azerbaijan and Armenia entered a fourth day on Wednesday in the biggest eruption of the decades-old conflict since a 1994 ceasefire.
  • Armenia said three civilians had been killed in Martakert, a town located in the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh, as a result of an Azeri attack, local news agency Armenpress reported.
  • French President Emmanuel Macron said Turkey’s “warlike” rhetoric was encouraging Azerbaijan to reconquer Nagorno-Karabakh.
  • Nagorno-Karabakh is a disputed region inside Azerbaijan and controlled by ethnic Armenians. It broke away from Azerbaijan in a war in the 1990s but is not recognised by any country as an independent republic.

Here are the latest updates:

Wednesday, September 30

16:53 GMT – Moscow urges parties to prevent use of foreign fighters

Russian Foreign Ministry said that illegal armed groups coming from Syria and Libya were being sent to the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, according to a statement.

Moscow called on both parties to prevent the use of foreign fighters and mercenaries in the conflict.

Two Syrian rebel sources have told Reuters that Turkey is sending Syrian rebel fighters to support Azerbaijan, which Turkey and Azerbaijan have denied.

16:02 GMT – Moscow willing to host Azeri and Armenian talks: Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Moscow was willing to host the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan for talks, a ministry statement cited him as saying.

He said Russia would continue to work both independently and together with other representatives of the Minsk group of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to mediate in the conflict.

15:26 GMT – One person killed, three wounded in Azeri town of Horadiz: Azerbaijan Prosecutor

One person was killed and three wounded by Armenian fire on the town of Horadiz in southern Azerbaijan, said the Azeri Prosecutor’s office.

14:40 GMT – An ‘all-out war’

Al Jazeera’s Robin Forestier-Walker, who has extensively covered developments in the region, said that videos being released from the contested region give the idea of “an all-out war”.

“The most committed observers to this conflict said that this is the worst they have seen since the ceasefire in 1994 that sort of froze this conflict.”

Both sides are making claims about how much success they had over the number of military infrastructures they destroyed. “It’s quite extraordinary,” said Forestier-Walker, adding that the Armenians reported to have blown up 137 tanks and armored vehicles, 72 aerial vehicles, 7 helicopters and aircraft.

“Azerbaijan is also making similar claims, perhaps in larger numbers, but certainly when we see the military videos that have been released – and some are really ghastly – it gives a sense that this is really an all-out war of the like we haven’t seen since the Nineties.”

13:45 GMT – Azerbaijan ‘determined’ to fight until Armenian troops’ withdrawal

Azerbaijan vowed to pursue military action against Armenian forces until their full withdrawal from the disputed territory.

“We only have one condition: Armenian armed forces must unconditionally, fully, and immediately leave our lands,” Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said in televised remarks.

If “the Armenian government fulfils the demand, fighting and bloodshed will end, and peace will be established in the region,” he added.

The two rival countries have so far rejected international calls for a halt to fighting and negotiations.

12:30 GMT – Azerbaijan President Aliyev thanks Turkey’s Erdogan for support

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev has thanked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his support, as fighting between Azerbaijan and ethnic Armenian forces entered a fourth day around the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Erdogan said on Monday Azerbaijan must take matters into its own hands and Turkey would stand “with all its resources and heart” behind Baku.

Aliyev said Pakistan, Afghanistan and Turkey all demonstrated support, but added Azerbaijan’s army did not need external help.

11:15 GMT – Three Armenian civilians killed in Nagorno-Karabakh town: Armenian state media

Armenia says three civilians have been killed in Martakert, a town situated in the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh, as a result of an Azeri attack, the state-run Armenpress news agency reported.

10:30 GMT – Russian military closely following Nagorno-Karabakh developments: Kremlin

The Kremlin has said Russia’s military was closely following developments over Nagorno-Karabakh and again urged the opposing sides to end hostilities.

09:40 GMT – Armenia publishes photos of wreckage it says is SU-25 warplane shot down by Turkish F-16 jet

Armenia has posted pictures on an online government platform of the wreckage of a plane it said was a SU-25 warplane, shot down by a Turkish fighter jet on September 29.

Turkey and Azerbaijan have denied Yerevan’s claim that a Turkish F-16 fighter jet shot down the Armenian plane, killing the pilot. On Wednesday, Armenia’s defence ministry named the pilot as Major Valeri Danelin.

09:15 GMT – ‘Will do what is necessary’: Turkish foreign minister

Turkey will back Azerbaijan with “every means available” in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has said.

“We will do what is necessary … if Azerbaijan wants to resolve this [conflict] on the field,” Cavusoglu told state news agency Anadolu after being asked whether Turkey is providing military support to Baku.

Azerbaijan currently has the “capacity” to handle the situation on its own, Cavusoglu says.

08:45 GMT – Turkey says French solidarity with Armenia supports occupation in Azerbaijan

Turkish Foreign Minister Cavusoglu has said French solidarity with Armenia amounted to supporting Armenian occupation in Azerbaijan.

He was speaking in an interview with state-run Anadolu news agency after French President Emmanuel Macron said Turkey’s “warlike” rhetoric was encouraging Baku to reconquer Nagorno-Karabakh.

08:07 GMT – Macron criticises Turkey’s “warlike” rhetoric on Nagorno-Karabakh

French President Macron has said Turkey’s “warlike” rhetoric was encouraging Azerbaijan to reconquer Nagorno-Karabakh and that was unacceptable, though he added he had no proof at this stage of direct Turkish involvement.

Fierce fighting broke out on Sunday between Armenian and Azeri forces over Nagorno-Karabakh. Turkey is an ally of Azerbaijan, with which it shares ethnic and cultural ties.

“I have noted Turkey’s political declarations (in favour of Azerbaijan), which I think are inconsiderate and dangerous,” Macron told a news conference in Latvia.

07:25 GMT – Armenia says no need for outside military help

Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who spoke by phone to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, says he is not at this point considering asking for help under a post-Soviet security treaty – but did not rule out doing so.

“Armenia will ensure its security, with the participation of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) or without it,” Russian news agencies quoted Pashinyan as saying.

He said he and Putin had not discussed the possibility of Russian military intervention in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Russia has used the CSTO, along with the Eurasian Economic Union, another regional bloc focused on trade, to project influence across most of the former Soviet Union.

07:00 GMT – Armenia not ready for Russia-mediated peace talks: PM

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan says peace talks with Azerbaijan under Russian mediation would be inappropriate, as fighting over the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region entered a fourth day.

“It isn’t very appropriate to speak of a summit between Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia at a time of intensive hostilities,” Pashinyan told Russia’s Interfax news agency. “A suitable atmosphere and conditions are needed for negotiations.”

06:35 GMT –  2,300 Armenian soldiers ‘neutralised’: Azerbaijan defence ministry

At least 2,300 Armenian soldiers have been killed or wounded by Azerbaijani troops since the conflict between the two countries began on Sunday, Azerbaijan’s defence ministry has said, according to an Anadolu Agency report.

Al Jazeera was not able to independently identify these numbers.

The ministry statement added that 130 tanks and armoured vehicles, more than 200 artillery and missile systems, approximately 25 air defence systems, six command and observation zones, five ammunition depots, 50 anti-tank guns and 55 cars were also destroyed.

Trade Talks Progressing - Southeast AgNet

gamagana.blogspot.com

The United States and the United Kingdom wrapped up the fourth round of trade talks this month, with another round planned for mid-October.

Doud

The UK Department of International Trade says, “Significant progress has been achieved since launching negotiations in May 2020, and most chapter areas are now in the advanced stages of talks.”

Chief Ag Negotiator with the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office, Gregg Doud, spoke Monday during an Agri-Pulse and Kansas City Agribusiness Council event.

Doud told attendees, “I’m confident here that we are going to get an opportunity to engage with them and work on these issues,” the issues being tariffs, biotech and market opportunity. Doud noted tariffs on U.S. products will be high when the UK leaves the European Union, upwards of 25 percent. However, for beef, pork and poultry, the UK imports $4.5 billion of meat from the European Union. Doud says, “if we can get things right, I think we will have a fair shot at that,” giving U.S. meat producers a new market.
